Ok I’ve not had a lot of time to spare at the moment, but I should be able to get started at the weekend. The existing terrain e.g., Dover is greatly scaled down, this means that on my 1:1 terrain there will only be room for a couple of airfields.
As far as I can tell the terrain maps are 64km square, they are divided into a 20x20 grid of Lods.
The texture files are 5080x5080 pixels and are also divided into a 20x20 grid using the dicer program.
Now the western front is petty damn flat for the most part so I am thinking of doubling the contour heights so they at least show up.
So far I have a scan of a map of Cambrai at 5080x5080 showing the trench systems, which I’ll overlay with some colour aerial photos (not Cambrai unfortunately). Then there will be a lot of hand painting to be done.
I’ll start the mesh, using the contour map at the weekend. I’m taking notes as I go so I can write up some “how to” docs later.

I'm really looking forward to this. Where are you getting the aerial photographs from? On the web? I looked around some time ago and couldn't find any that were both good quality and free.

Attila,

Wow! This is so cool. I think that even fitting just a couple of airfields should be fine. I invision losts of standard "go on patrol" missions anyway. The coolest thing would be the modeling of the trench systems. A nice historic base terrain will go A LONG WAY to making WWI in SDOE a reality!

I think doubling heights sounds cool - anthing that doesn't kill realistic yet adds fun and sense of flying over a 3D world.

If we keep the terrain simple compared to the shipping terrains, can we afford to add more trees and farms and stuff? I like the tree-row objects that line some fields. I could see these tree-rows around farmer's fields and lining roads...

I'm gonna start working up a "how to create and place new ground targets" doc if I can figure it out. If you can make the terrain a reality others can be ready to populate it with cool WWI stuff
