I'm just about to start on a WW1 western front terrain, so I thought I'd ask which area people would like to see, Verdun or the Somme. Looks like it'll be about a 60Km section of the front, I'm inclined to go for the Cambrai area of the Somme so that there is a good excuse for tanks. I've got few maps of the front and I'm going out tomorrow to try and get the Ordinance Survey reprints of the trench system. Producing a mesh of the area shouldn't be a problem as I've done this kind of thing before and the texture is no problem. Once I've produced a grid of Lods I guess these get put into an .SM. After this I'm still in the dark! So any help from here would be greatly appreciated. Attila

Great Stuff Attila.I was wondering how long it would be before a WWI terrain would come along. As to which part, well I'll leave it up to you. Although Cambrai looks good to me. Cheers Bradburger IP: Logged |

Holy Sherlock Attila!!!!Do know how much ass this would kick?!?!? I am here to support you in any way I can... I'm not a great 3D guy - but I like to ask questions This is where I confused as well - if you can make the LOD meshes as seperate tiled objects, how do we stich them together in OPS? Bryan? If you can think of any way Bryan... how could this be done? I like your tank idea Attila... I am not a WWI history expert - I just love WWI aviation allot. A historicaly correct terrain gets me so excited... I can barely type! We can create ground infantry troop objects you know, we can get them to shoot small arms at the planes... pop! pop! We can make aerodromes, tent hangars - we allready have an observation balloon! Terrain is the last great frontier... Attila, if you can do this... ..Man!

I'd like to see the Somme. If you do get the terrain done, I'd love to see some sort of documentation produced to go along with it, like a chart of the grid showing the the position of all the numbered textured tiles. That way, if someone wants to try painting their own textures, he would know how they line up and could do the painting a few tiles at a time. I wouldn't mind if you gave the default cliff/riverbank textures a miss. Personally, I don't think they blend in very well with the general scheme of the rest of the maps. Just my opinion. I'd like to see the Somme region as well. You know, after you get all your lods and textures done, you'll have to place your aerodromes, towns, and objects/targets before you create your sm. This is were i ran into problems. Actually, I have learned alot since I last messed with it. I think maybe another look might be a help. With the above that means models for all that stuff along with textures and the like. But you need to include them when writing the sm for the new terrain. Also you will have to add the files and folders for it to be used in the mission editor. Wow, good to hear someone has taken on such a projects. I wish you well. ------------------ Zoycite {GS} GUNSLINGERS visit The War Paint Factory IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. How are you going to paint it so all the edges match up? I thought that was the big problem with making terrain?

Making ground targets can be pretty easy if you don't get carried away. SDOE has allot of great stuff - I don't think you would need to be that complete/detailed to do justice for WWI. I'm thinking simpler models but more of them scattered around... also it looks like a big part of the modeling time was spent on the damage versions of the targets - we could do this but keep it simpler.Making Aerodromes won't be bad - my only question is how are they placed in the SM file? Do they represent a tile of their own, or do they lay on the existing ground? If they lay on the ground, how do they match the lay of the land? Are they always on perfect level ground? I think it would be fin to have aerodromes on a slight hill or incline Attila, if you get this project off the ground I'de be happy to bang out ground stuff full time after the contest. New terrain/ground stuff is what is needed to push WWI in SDOE over the edge

Heya,First, Targets/objects(dams,pillboxes,factories,ect) overlay exsisting terrain tiles. Towns and airfields have their own tile with the buildings on them. I think that the current towns would be fine. Even some of the current objects. What is really needed is Aerodromes and a few WWI type objects. I cant remember off hand, but these items are stuck to the terrain via the terrain Sm, what I cant remember is if its flags or someother tag. These items then have their own SM that correlates to the terrain SM. Objects on the other hand just use the terrain SM. There are also some Ppf's that have to point towards the new objects and such. Thats where I was having torouble. Adding stuff to the terrain SM. It would either not show up or I would get a corrupt sm ------------------ Zoycite {GS} GUNSLINGERS visit The War Paint Factory IP: Logged | |
