SVs thread has got me thinking about optimising some of the texture usage on the 109s and 190s. There are a number of the larger textures that are common to the 109 series and others that are common to the 190s. I don't think it would be difficult to implement, involving renaming some textures, changing their location and altering the texture references in the relevant sm files.

This could save up to approx. 1.5meg in a mission with say 4 models of the 109 in it (granted an unlikely mission!)

Questions: 1) would this actually help with texture memory? or 2) do 2 identical but differently named textures use the same amount of memory as 2 identically named textures?

I believe that textures are indexed on texture path rather than texture name or content. For example the following are seperate textures and would be loaded seperatly in memory, even if they were identical.

./aircraft/spit/textures/wheel.tif
./aircraft/spitix/textures/wheel.tif

Thanks Brian that's what I suspected.

Could I also make a feature request for OPS. I use is primarily as a tool for viewing paint schemes at per pixel detail levels (it's far quicker and more accurate than launching the game). The only problem is that to view any alterations, I have to exit an OPS session and re-launch the application and set up my preferences again (i.e. screen size, lighting model position etc). As I am doing this maybe 50 times per skin the time adds up.

Therefore is it possible to allow textures in OPS to be refreshed without re-launching the application.
