Jeeves,
Here it is :The First Zeppelin Kill
On June 17, 1915, in a Morane Saulnier L, Lt. R.A.J. Warneford of the RNAF was flying toward Ostend. I was his first night flight, and he was going to bomb the Zeppelin sheds at Evere. Suddenly he spotted a strange cigar-shaped object sailing through the clouds. As he drew closer he saw the Maltese cross of the German Imperial Air Service.
It was the LZ 37, a German Zeppelin, 521 feet long, kept aloft by 935,000 cubic feet of dangerously falmmable hydrogen, and armed with four machine guns.
Warneford's single seater carried only a few bombs and a carbine. The Zeppelin continued to fire at him as they dumped ballast and rapidly rose higher into the sky. Warneford stuggled to gain altitude, still pursuing the big gas bag. Early into the morning Warneford pursued the Zeppelin. Suddenly the Zeppelin nosed down and baegan to lose altitude. Warneford pushed his little Morane up until he was over the zeppelin and realeased his bombs. After a few moments, the sky was rent with a tremendous explosion, and the gas bag plummeted to the earth engulfed in flames. Lt. Warneford was the first Allied flier to bring down a Zeppelin.
