It's true! I have a backseater now and was thinking of ways to get his head to move around and also wanted to change crew positions (F7 key) to watch the flight from the back. What I did was made the RIO figure out of the pilotSit obj, cut his head off (OUCH!) and made him a permenant part of the cockpit. I then opened up the B-17 in OpenPlane Studio (OPS for the newbies), selected the TOP turret and highlighted gun #1. I imported the head object of the RIO and then went Edit - Copy, and back into the OPS instance with the F-14 in it. I clicked on the main model and pasted the head/turret thingamajig into the model. Next I positioned the "turreted" head over the headless RIO object and deleted ALL other turret LODs except for the head. I aligned the DOFs to coincide with his head and neck for realistic movement, saved it all and test flew the new RIO. IT WORKS! It's really fun. I can jump into the back, pan the RIO's view around with my mouse (it's nice and fast), or hit F6 and slowly position his head and actually see him looking around from the F2 (external) view. Now I'm working on texturing him and the other cockpit parts, then I'll post some pics. Oh, his right arm is resting on the edge of the canopy frame too, with his hand looking like it's holding onto a frame handle, looks cool.I consider this a sort-of break through though, the first animated pilot object in the game

This is strange. If I select say the pilot and fly around some enemy planes I would expect the RIO's head to follow them (since it is a turret in reality) but it doesn't. I'll keep messing with it. If anyone has any input on this please let me know.IP: Logged |

You go Pete!I have to admit, I love this kind of stuff. In Janes WWII Fighters I always like to watch the pilot's head track the targets. I know it doen't actually effect game play, but by golly....it's cool! Anyway, great 1st step Pete. Keep us up to date on further progress. PR=FC=

SPanky here... Great work man keep pushing those barriers back.
I must admit i wasn't too excited when you said you were making an f-14 (i'm and early jet man) but you keep adding all kinds of new stuff to your planes that adds to the sim on a whole. KICKS ASS. IP: Logged |

Are you saying his head pans through a full 360 degrees. Because if you are you had better get him out of the F-14, chain him to a bed and call a Catholic Priest ------------------ Yardstick painted this

Brilliant Idea. Using a turret that looks like a head. Maybe we could make him shoot lasers from his eyes. Pete, you continue to set new standards for SDOE. Good work.
