Now this may be an inane question, but one never knows.

Couldn't you create a textured sky (very pale at the horizon and a deep blue up top) by constructing a gigantic box or dome out of poygons and adding it to the terrain? You would have to set the clip out distance to 50 miles or therabouts so it would always be visible. I'm assuming the fog could stay as I don't think it extends up much beyond ground level, though I could be wrong about that.

I've been wanting to try it out, but I'm busy with another project just now. And there's the fact that I'm a bit openplane challenged and can't even seem to properly load a terrain file into OPS. I'm hoping someone else might give it a try.

I messed with this months ago, with different cloud pictures I got from a weather site on the web, but it was tough to get it "just right" and therefore I stopped trying. But you're right, with a big box as an object you can place in missions, the theory of it working does work! It's cool cause I was never able to reach "the edge" of the sky. You can make a nice black sky to go with the night (darkend) terrain... and it can have stars on it! You know what, I'm gonna try this again except with a big dome. Curious. If I run into anything cool I'll post info about it.

Pete:

You did this AND DIDN'T TELL ANYONE UNTIL NOW? Could you send me your textured box object? I wouldn't mind messing about with different textures. I never thought of having it as an object you can put in with the mission editor. That's a great idea and much easier than adding it to the terrain sm. What I had in mind was still using the in-game clouds and just using the box for a gradient sky background, not using photographs but rather a paint program.

This will be great if it can be made to look right.

Michael, it's long gone. I got frustrated with getting all the seams of it perfect and just deleted it months ago. BUT the sun (if it's shining in a mapped picture) looks great!

would that take the frame rate right down, because FS will display the SM at all times (since it is visiable).

Good luck pete!

I think you would have to set the polygons so there is no shading to get rid of seams, if that can be done. I suspect it would affect frame rates, but it'd be worth it to me.

Pete,
In the Max2Obj dialogue, just export without normals and it won't have any shading to it.
