I am about to start making some Soviet squadrons for this project as per Zoycite and Werner's request and would like some names- we will need a few fighter squadron names and two ground attack and a possible bomb squadron if one gets done- if you have any input- including where to find insignia- it would be much appreciated. A partial reply to myself- but more of a question For one of the bomber squadrons- how about the one everyone was talking about earlier with the women pilots? They definitely made a huge contribution to the war effort- the one I've found so far are the 46th Guards Night Bomber Regiment- they flew 24,000 night missions during the war and earned the name "night witches" from the Germans.Also- how about one with Aleksandr Pokryshkin ( don't ask me to pronounce that one!)- he had 59 victories in the P-39...which I believe someone is working on. Please give input on these ideas... IP: Logged |

This is an excellent site, recently updated: http://pratt.edu/~rsilva/sovwomen.htm This is from the site:
Thousands of Russian women and girls courageously fought for their Rodina (Motherland), serving with the Voyenno-Vozdushniye Sily (Air Forces, in Russian). In 1942, three air regiments were formed from female volunteers: The 586th Women's Fighter Regiment (initially equipped with Yakovlyev YaK-1s and later YaK-7Bs) The 587th Women's Day Bomber Regiment (flying Petlyakov Pe-2 2-engined bombers) The 588th Women's Night Bomber Regiment, the famous "Night Witches" (flying Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes) Many other women also served integrated with men with other aviation units. For example, in 1944, 1,749 girls served with Zabaikalsky Front, 3,000 women and girls served with the Far East 10th Air Army, 437 women served with the 4th Air Army of the Second Belorussian Front that comprised the crack 46th Guards Women Air Regiment that comprised 237 women-officers, 862 sergeants, 1,125 enlisted women and 2,117 auxiliaries. They also served flying and as gunners in the famous Il-2 and Il-2M3 Shturmovik tank busters, the "Flying Bathtub". Women-pilots of female air regiments engaged in dogfights, cleared the way for the advancing infantry and supported them in ground support missions. The fighter pilots of the all-women 586th IAP (Russian abbreviation for Fighter Aviation Regiment, same as Fighter Air Regiment) flew a total of 4,419 sorties (per pilot) and participated in more than 125 separate air battles, in which they massed a total of 38 confirmed kills. That is, the sorties when the enemy was actually encountered. Sexism in the V-VS was high initially, male pilots refusing to fly with women as "wingmen", or fly airplanes that had been repaired or serviced by women mechanics and ground crew. But the demonstrated, and often superior, courage and great skill of these female soldiers proved their better than average competence to fullfil their duty. The USSR highly praised the combat deeds of female pilots: thousands won orders and medals. 29 won titles of Hero of the Soviet Union. 23 of these went to the Night Witches.

Thanks Tail and Laika-I think I'll stay away from doing the "Night Witches" Squadron for now as they flew the biplane- I might do Lilya Litvyak's squadron- she flew Yak-1's which are about as close to the Yak-3 as we are going to get- (when will that one be released anyway?) Beyond that- I'll play around with doing one for General G. N. Zajharov- the CO of the 303 Fighter Division- he flew Yak-3's. That a bit off topic (but only a little...) what about a new terrain for all the soviet aircraft (and new vehicles too..) ? I would like something like Leningrad or Stalingrad...IP: Logged |

I've had similar thoughts of a Finnish Gulf (Southern Finland, Nothern Estonia, Leningrad area, Karelian Isthmus, the gulf islands) map. A good area would be the line east of Helsinki-Tallinn line on the map below. This would be great to simulate the russian bombraids to the finnish coastal cities and the intercepts by finnish 109 G-2's and G-6's (and Brewsters, once we get them ). Not to mention that the germans occupied the southern coast, and there were many aerial battles between them and the russian near Leningrad. I believe this map could be made pretty big (100km x 100km?), because there's lots of sea and the land is almost flat along the coast. Of course, only if this is possible concerning memory usage etc... Do we have the knowledge to build a map from scratch yet? Camo ------------------ Camouflage XO, Lentolaivue 34 www.muodos.fi/LLv34

I'm staying away from that one Hawker Guys- the new map sounds good, and I hope someone is ambitious enough to do it. Until then, I was just thinking we could use the Rhineland map- especially since thanks to Zoycite- we have winter! There could be some interesting battles over that scenery- maybe even recreating Kursk...if we get someone to make Russian tanks IP: Logged |

Re: Soviet Tanks- Archy and I need 3D modellers and a few OP wizards if we're going to pick up the pace of production here. How is the best way to go about getting help, do you guys think? I don't want to keep begging and pleading and squawking when what we need are dedicated people. Archy is working hard, I'm trying to learn, but neither one of us has the experience necessary to get lots of vehicles produced in time for the Soviet theatre to be completed. The Bottom line is... WE NEED MORE TEAM MEMBERS. I guess it comes down to the bitter reality that if enough people want it, somebody will step forward to help. If there isn't enough demand, the domain of vehicles won't be explored even close to its potential. Time will tell, I guess. Werner ------------------ Do you support SDOE online? Heya,A word on terrain. It is a has been easier to make an airplane than make terrain. To date. I have probably an idea/work around that I might try for some WWI terrain. AS for an ETO, I have already tried this. And may do so again. Just so little time to do the things i need to do. In the mean time, Jeeves is correct. The Rhinland and Rhinland Winter maps would work and be historically accurate. The Soviets near the end of the war flew many sorties in to Germany. ------------------ Zoycite {GS} GUNSLINGERS visit The War Paint Factory IP: Logged | |
