Thanks all - Pete, Zoycite, SV!
Switching over to "Projects" per SVs suggestion.
Well, I'm makin some muddling progress. Got the extractor working & been messing around with 109g.asc in ac3d (yeah, I know that ya said I have to edit the individual LODs, but found it easier to visualise what I'm doing with the whole 'craft in there... just practice anyway :-} my intent is to do a Macchi 202 Folgore from it, though the gear retracts inward... can I import the Tiffie or P51 gear into it? ).

Some more questions:
1) Do I extract all of Hippies plugin files from the zip into the plugin folder of ac3d, or just the ones he mentions in the readme, i.e. These files go in the AC3D plugins directory:

lod_import.p
lod_export.p
asc_import.p
asc_export.p
tiffload.p
add_lod.p
add_model.p
switchIn_2.p
switchIn_2.tcl
swap.p
dof.p
dof.tcl
If so where do the rest of the files go?

2) Trying to load a background 3 view that I scanned (very small original) and expanding it to the proper size in Photoshop after converting it to bitmap. This results in a very large file and overloads my C drive.
ac3d doesn't like the bitmap produced, what type bitmap does it like? Had to convert it to a tiff to get it in.
Can I minimize the ammount of C drive resources that ac3d uses and switch it over to D,E or F? ac3d is installed in D drive.

Many thanks again guys!

...You can import the gear from other planes, but it may be easier just to alter how yours move. Changing motion is quite easy with OPS.

1. I think just the ones he mentioned in the reademe file, but I forget. I think I just did exactly what he said to do there...

2. I only import the images for the part I am working on - this makes the file smaller. I use a bmp file. I think you can save at lower color setting. I use dark bly background with grey lines - like blueprints. This way you can see the AC3D vertecies and lines better.

I'm not sure about how to change where AC3D stores stuff - is it the TEMP folder? If so, you can chnage the TEMP folder your system uses to point to another drive with more room.

Just create a correct sized polygon in the XY window and texture it with the image you like. From there you can trace the outline of your object. Seems like AC3D only shows the texture in this window and the 3d window so you have to rotate your object.

mposis,

I have gotten textures in other windows, but it doesn't always work in any window but the 3D window. You can try re-loading - going into the 3D window only - then back to the ortho - then try remapping coords. Heheh...
