Does anyone know what gunsight was used in the early bubbletop P-47d Thunderbolts? I've found photos of Thunderbolts equipped with the K-14a gunsight, but I've also found photos of bubbletop Thunderbolts with other gunsights. Thanks, in advance. IP: Logged |

Just do like Jane's did and just rip the one from the P51D Make sure it has "NO HOLD HERE" on the front Raz

I went searching for gunsight info as soon as I saw your post. I found someone stating that both the Mk8 reflector sight with sun screen and N3N sight were used on the Jug. However, I don't know what model P-47 they were used on. There weren't any pictures either. Another piece of information I found is a very small one. The gun barrels on the 47 were not in line with the leading edge of the wing. Instead, they were paralell with the ground.Hope this helps, Peregrine IP: Logged |

It's good to know the names of the other gunsights, at least. I'm thinking at this point that the K-14a was retrofitted to older models. I may just go with the K-14a since I don't have good images of other gunsights. :-( >The gun barrels on the 47 were not in line with the leading edge of the wing. Instead, they were paralell with the ground. Thanks... I had suspected that, but wasn't sure. It's kind of hard to tell from photos and I don't trust drawings. IP: Logged |

Hi Woodpanel! I have already sit in the cockpit of an airworthy P-47D. I don't know the exact model, but it was a late one surely. I took 3 pics of the cockpit, one especially of the gunsight. I don't have the pics scanned, but I can describe detailedly what I have seen if you want. The plane is fitted with the 100% original instruments, it had been stored in a hangar at an airbase here since it was put out of service in the early 50's.IP: Logged |

JT,Since you don't have any definite info, I guess the K-14 would be a good choice. Also, how are you going to model the sight. I mean, are you going to rip it from the P-51, or model it from scratch? I wonder if it would be possible to model a gyro gunsight like the artificial horizon? Anyway, I'm looking forward to your Thunderbolt. Be sure to post some shots of your -47 for us. Thanks, Peregrine IP: Logged |

Cascavallete,Do you know what kind of gunsight it has? If not, can you describe it? I think I'm pretty much set for everything else in the cockpit. Thanks! Peregrine, I'm going to model the gunsight from scratch. In fact, the whole plane, inside and out is done from scratch... well, I might use wheels from other planes. As far as the gyro action gunsight goes, I'm pretty sure it would be possible, but I wouldn't know how to do it. It would be very cool, though. I will ask Bjorn. IP: Logged |

Unfortunately I think not. I'm not sure exactly what data needs to be queried about the aircrafts movements, but I'm certain it can't all be obtained via OpenPlane as it looks today. Can anyone fill me in exactly on how those things works so I can better find out if after all it might be possible. _ /Bjorn.IP: Logged |

A-ha!!! I knew I had a pic of this gunsight somewhere... I found out it's very similar to the one in the CFS P-47D. But to be more exact, I made some editing in the pic. Here's it (it's the best I can do in graphic editors... ) It's basically the same gunsight of CFS, except that I removed the slip indicator, mad e it more circle-like (it was too oval in CFS) and I added that part where it reads "no hold here" in the Mustang sight. I dont know what is that for, but it exists in this gunsight and it's covered with brick-colored imitation leather! Hope it helps. Anyway, I'm here in case of any questions...
