Ok, I was wondering why smoke is not effected by prop wash? I know prop wash is modeled in this game, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on smoke. Is this a hard coded thing? or could it be fixed through OP?------------------ Cheers! Jaguar www.fshangar.com IP: Logged |

That's probably a toughie. The smoke effects in games today are really just partially transparent textures on invisible polygons. I would imagine it's very difficult to have smoke behave in a naturalistic fashion using the current method. We probably won't see a "physics model" for smoke until games start using particle systems for such effects. As far as I know, however, rendering particle systems in real-time requires too much processing power to be practical for games. The smoke effects in B-172 look pretty amazing, though. I'm not sure how those are done, but I'm very curious.[This message has been edited by JT (edited 01-03-2000).] IP: Logged |

but the prop was SHOULD act on the invisiable polys, right?..... so 2 questions. What do the polys look like? and can we detach the polys into small polys, have them less dense than the air, then have them react to the prop wash?------------------ Cheers! Jaguar www.fshangar.com IP: Logged |

At the moment, the smoke objects don't go looking for nearby objects which create "wind". They only pay attention to the global wind. So prop wash won't affect smoke trails for now. That is something I'm had on my wish list though. IP: Logged |

And while we are talking about smoke: My gun and tracer smoke is quite weird. It's gray and solid. I played SDOE with a friend on his computer, and there it was nice, black and transparent. I can't fly with tracer and gun smoke on, because it looks horrible.------------------ We shall fight on the beaches, in the streets, on the sea, in the air.... and in SDOE!!! IP: Logged |

Actually, the gun smoke should be grey and transparent, so it's appearing wrong on both machines. What video cards are you using on each machine? IP: Logged |

Well.....I'm using an ATI 3d Rage Pro with as little as 8mb video memory. My PC is a PII 350mhz with 64MB SDRAM. My friend has got a PIII 600 mhz pc with 32 mb video card. (A Diamond Viper) Actually, I tried SDOE at another friends PC today. He's also got a 3d Rage Pro with 8mb memory, and he got it quite a lot better.------------------ We shall fight on the beaches, in the streets, on the sea, in the air.... and in SDOE!!! Spanky here... Hi guys I use a voodoo banshee and the smoke looks great. I turned it off once to get extra FPS but I missed it too much. It looks like gray/white smoke to me, Just how I would have done it! About the partical effects I hear about console games using them all the time why not computer games? hehe About the ATI cards. just hearing about those cards makes me shiver they are so nasty. Always behind the curve and plagued by bad drivers. Ditch them as soon as possible.
I have owned 2 and used 2 other on friends machines and they all were the worst cards I have seen. IP: Logged |

Ditto that on the banshee. I have one too and I love it. Graphics-wise, SDOE runs like a dream (I've even run it with fog pushed out to maximum, with only small tile-warping problems!) I tell you, I am one happy Diamond Multimedia customer! Werner ------------------ Do you support SDOE online? Email Werner to be listed in SDOE's online phonebook today! IP: Logged |
