Hey there!
Best wishes to everyone again !

OK - I just changed my mind and cause I´m a Newbie in OPS and such things I wont start with the Il-2 "Sturmovik" Attacker (but when everything goes good this will be the next project).
So I decided for the I-16 "Rata" cause this is a very simple and small fighter - a good plane to start with.

Today I started with the wings and the first result where about 140 Polys for each. I overworked it again and again and now there are 72 Polys(Faces) per Wing - I think thats good enough.

Tailslide wrote that all the parts of the plane must fit seamless together. Is this really necessary? Or can objects overlay each other (fuse and wing ends...)?

Thanks so far !

From what I have seen it depends on the joint. A wing joining into a cylinder fuse need not match exactly - just insert the wing a bit into the fuse.

But let's say you have a wing that joins into a filet into the fuse. The wing root shape needs to match the filet shape exactly or you will see this joint. Do to this (I use AC3D) just copy the wing root verts, paste it in as a new object, and use that as a starting point for the filet. That way they will match exactly. I did this on my SE5a for example. The center wing section uses a certain rib shape. I used the exact shape for the outer wing panels where they meet the center section. From there it is easy to line them up in OPS (thanks Bryan!) - you just use ctrl-arrow keys to nudge them into place. This was easier than I thought it would be.

This being said, I do suck at 3D editing -maybe others have a better idea about this...

The wings you can have some overlap with the fuselage, but the parts you divide up for damage (wing sections, fuselage sections) should meet up cleanly. Take a peek at some of the existing planes using OPStudio and pull the pieces apart..

Since that plane is so tiny you could probably skip the partial damage sections for the wing and fuselage!

Tailslide:

I decided to make no extra wingtip only for the damage thing... but should I also make no extra tail (the plane is really tiny an I think it looks unreal when the tail is busted away...)

Laika - do you get the 'Ghosts' calendars? This year's features a wing of about five or six I-16s in formation. Funny thing is I said to myself, wouldn't it be neat if someone built that. Whoa!

Best of luck!

Thanks Molders for the wishes ! I´m still goin...

It was a bit tricky to build up the fuselage and the wing joints - enough for today - see ya tomorrow !

btw: can I import only the plane objects (without a flight model) into FSSDOE to check the model for leaks etc. ?

sure. just take a ground object .sm and replace the 3D model with yours. Just make sure you back up the ground object first You might haveto texture map the plane first though... not sure.

Nice choice of aircraft to model, Polikarpov
I-16 !

I'm seriously considering donating my time
to develop an aircraft also, and considered
this one for the same exact reasons.

You go man! Good luck, and thanks for donating your time to develop an aircraft!

All we need is for a Soviet Nation folder thingy to put this and other Soviet planes in... I think Razer(one of them) said he was going to put something about how-to in the FAQ section, but I haven't seen it yet.

Actually adding a new Nation-A/C folder "thingie" is quite easy. I did
it for Rhineland Winter and had started a Soviet folder, but I have misplaced it. It was like 6 months ago.

If you take a look at the exsisting stuff, you'll see where and what you have to add or change.

Zoy, if you were to write a brief tutorial/explanation for how to do this and post it at the wpfactory, that would be great! One question though, were you able to get the sound files to replace the german/english ones?

Werner,

Hmm, I'll see what I can do. I have alot going on right so it might be a while. As for sounds, I dont have any Russian sounds. These could easily be made by someone who can speak Russian.

I took Russan in college. I can't say I know enough to look up the right phrases, or put in the best slang, but if the text were found I can read and pronounce Russian phonetically. I'd gladly do the voices, if somebody knew the words.

If I looked up the words, it would be very stilted. I wouldn't know the slang, or how to conjugate the dictionary level words into a sentence. For example, the English slang term "Winchester" would come out to a Russian as "I no ammunition". Not very realistic, but "Ya ne bowenpreepatsee" would sound cool! (Souce: www.freedict.com/onldict/rus.html
áîåïðèïàñû = Ammunition)

Granted, if somebody knows the words, they'll probably know how to say them too.
So I'm likely not that much help.

watch somebody crucify me on that terrible translation attempt.

I know someone going to school in Russia. If someone types up a list of english phrases I can ask real nice...

Personally, I'd rather hear english with a russian accent.. same goes for the german I have no idea what the bogey calls are saying and that'll be important when we can set the map to not show enemies online.. a guy could copy the english ones over but that kinda ruins it.

TS- I agree with you. I think it is a real disadvantage to people who like to fly axis but can't speak the language. Online I think people resort to alt-v and padlock instead, which takes away from the realism. That being said, there are people here whose mother tongue is german and could say the same about the American and British a/c.

In any case, either english with an accent or pure russian would be wonderful. Now, the last time I tried to throw this bird off the deck there were a whole lot of offers but all hit 'the catch'- you must be able to digitize these recordings! I will gladly hunt down the list of calls to make if there is somebody that a) has the necessary digitizing equipment and b) can speak russian or c) fake a good accent. If you meet these criteria, please email me and we'll set something up. Zoy, if this works out, I'll send you the sound files as soon as they're done. What format do they need to be in?

I probablty couldn't do a convincing Russian accent, But it would seem easy to record the sounds as wave files. What format do they need to be in?

I went out with a Russian girl for a few years in high school and had many experiences with there language. But I cnat speak a word of it. At supper I always felt her grandmother was talking about me. That was some time ago, she and her family moved away and after HS we lost contact. I tell you one thing Russian women are very high spirited

Any how, I think Tails idea on using a Russian accent would be better. My impersonations are terrible. I will have to check, but I believe all sound files are in the "wav" format. And recording these in this format could be done from any pc with a mic and windows. Editing it would take a bit more, but there is plenty of freeware out there to do this.

Let know how it goes, and I will start adding the Soviets as a Nation, kinda of a side project I guess. Anyone have some copyright free Soviet squad photos that could be used in the Squadrons Folder?? Might as well go for the gusto. What about photos of Russian medals from WWII?? Any of these will be a great help.

Thanks,

TS- I saw your message, "If someone types up a list of english phrases I can ask real nice..." but it seemed like the power to get the job done would be out of your hands. In any case, I'll get to work finding a list of calls and then I'll email it to you.

Zoycite/TS if you could double check what format the files have to be in and then post your findings, that would be great.

After Russia... Japan!
