If you are interested in editing the airfoils for your OpenPlane project, this is the best web page I found in terms of gaining the needed knowledge to edit the airfoil data:
http://beadec1.ea.bs.dlr.de/Airfoils/veldistr.htm

Here you will find the definition of Lift Coefficient, Drag Coefficient, and Moment Coefficient.

Lift Coefficient:

Drag Coefficient:

Moment Coefficient:

Moment refers to the tourque force trying to push the AOA up or down.

If I remember correctly,
L = Lift Force
D = Drag Force
M = Moment Force
p = air density
V = velocity
S = wing area
l = lift force (I think - seems logical)

Here is a screen shot of Etienne's airfoil editor (wing extrator):

The X axis is AOA, -180 on the left, 0 in the center, and +180 degrees on the right

The Y axis is the coef. value.

The red line is the lift coef, the green line is the drag coef, and the blue line is the moment coef. I am not sure what the other 3 lines mean - nether did tailslide it seems - any idia anyone? These other lines are refered to as:

dCl = ?
dCd = ?
dCm = ?

Oh well...

It sure would be nice to have an AOA readout in SDOE - well was that on the force vector/poly debug screen? I need to try that again and see...

WWI in SDOE!

For the following explanations it is assumed, that a stream of air is directed against an airfoil, which is fixed in space. This is equivalent to an airfoil moving through the air - just a question of the reference system. A typical wind tunnel works in the same way.

Hmmm, reference system? Does the wing "feel" this wind? I think this guy is over-complicating it
