I would like to buy some books on 3D modeling in AC3D, 3D Studio Max, and any other 3D software that may be used for SDOE. What are some good books to buy?

A few that I have are...

3DS Max: Tutorials from the Masters
Inside 3DS Max Vol 1
3DS Max F/X
3DS Max Fundamentals

Aside from the manual I think you can never have too much info. Each book brings with it certain modeling tips that the others don't. So I've gotten good ideas from all of them.

And for Truespace
Caligari Truespace 2 Bible.

As far as making planes non of them are as good as what JT posted about the fuselage. Airplane making info is hard to come by! The only thing that came close was making a Kangaroo with the same techniques. All of them came with CD's loaded with good stuff as well.

I'd definately recommend the Inside ... series of books from New Riders.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/073570905X/qid=945378589/sr=1-37/103-4208534-6714255
Volume 1 covers basic modelling, animation, materials, etc. Another volume covers advanced modelling (including game vs. high end models) using polys, nurbs, splines, patches, anything. - But so does volume 1.

If you're unfamiliar with 3dsmax I highly suggest volume 1.

I doubt you'll be able to find a big comprehensive book covering AC3D... (the book would cost more than the software does!)

All the "major" packages have an "Inside..." book about them so I'd suggest stopping there first (Though I'm only guessing they're up to the same quality as the 3dsmax ones.)

I just bid on

Inside 3DS Max 2 Vol 1
Inside 3DS Max 2 Vol 2

Will this work for 3DS Max 2.5, 3.0 etc., or do the books change?
