I'm curious to know how the AI will be able to handle planes for roles other than pure fighter or bomber.

The way I see it, the fighter AI tries to get on the tail of enemy planes, while the bomber AI just flies in straight lines and hopes the gunners shoot down opposition.

What about dive-bombers though? More to the point, what about two-seater dive bombers? I'm thinking about the Stuka that somebody is working on... How will the AI know to dive bomb? How will it know to weave around to give the tailgunner a shot at the enemy? Or, is the only solution to have these planes piloted by humans?

Another plane type might be recon or transport planes. They would need to have some type of evasive AI.

Are the AI routines smart enough to look at their available armament, and use it to the best of their ability, or do they just assume fighter or bomber role? Is the AI smart enough to alter/break off its attack if one or more weapons becomes unusable?

I'm interested to know how robust the AI really is.

At the moment, the AI is pretty much as you describe with the exception that it does handle fighter-bombers.

The AI goes through quite a few decisions for Fighters and bombers but isn't as good as a human when it comes to bombing.
