As you can see, I still have a ways to go.

Okay, that didn't work.

Michael,

Fantastic !
Perfect !

The second user made WWI plane in SDOE.
Nothing compares to SDOE.
Look at the RB3dīs camel or Dawn of acesīs camel (or FS98īs camel): yours is better.

I think that we are making RB2000 !

Congratulations.

Glad you like it nuum! I still have to do the landing gear, wires, cockpit, engine and Vickers guns. And then the flight model. I'm afraid it's very time consuming and it'll be a while before I'm finished.

Michael,
I am modeling the wires in flap transparent stripes (each wire in a stripe) . I tried flat big squares (to put X-wires in) but this can kill the FPS. The looking of the alpha to model the wires is far better than 3d objects as SV remarked. Perhaps stripes can be FPS killers, too. I donīt know how much...
I have to model the wires because they are a very impressive part of the WWI aircrafts.
I think I have some Vickers pics (and camelīs engine pics). If you want I can send to you. (If have any doubt about parts of the aircraft I can send a image to you - 600 camel pics)

Keep up the outstanding work .

I have a complete set of actual Camel blue prints, so I know exactly what every part looks like. But if you have a front on colour picture of a Clerget or BR1 engine I could try using it as a texture. I might also be able to use a picture of a vickers for a texture (if it's taken from the side) or at least to help with a texture. I got the blue prints from a place called Replicraft in California. The fellow there has them for a number of WWI planes. I don't know if he's still in business, but I can give you the address if you're interested.

That kicks total ass!!!!!!

I wish my Se5a was closer to being done, looks like the Flying Circus needs some help

Too bad OpenPlane does not support magneto switched throtal control

How much time do you think you have left to finish it? Any word in the FM, DM?

I can not believe how good it looks! WHat tools did you use to do it? Does it have sounds yet?

I need to settle down here

I would think you could map it to the throtal control like this:

off = no juice
1/4 = switch on every 3 seconds for .1 seconds
1/2 = switch on every second for .1 seconds
3/4 = keep on, switch off every 2 seconds for .5 seconds
full = always on.

That would rule! Imagine feeling the tourque! Zooom... Zoooom.. ZooOOOOOMMMmmmm.

Heheh

It would be interesting to see how you model the faster right hand turn capability of the Camel!

Kopper, if the prop has the weight of the engine then the torque effect should work with no extra FM coding! It will be neat to see how well this works...

The wacky throttle only applies to rotary engines that spin. What other planes had spinning engines?

I know the Camel did, and the Dh2, right Nuum? The SE5a has a water cooled inline. The Fokker DR1 has a stationary rotary engine.

I just remembered that there were multiple magneto settings - one would fire every time, one would fire every other time, and I think a 3rd position would fire every 4th time or something. You can hear this at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome when they fly the Camel - the sound is terrible! SnapSnapSnap, Snap-er_Snaper-er_Spnaper_ZooOOOMMMmm_prrrr_SnapSnapSnap heheh

I think it flies though oil as well - you need to fill up the oil tank before each flight.

What a beautiful mess!

It may surprise you all to know that WWI fighters are my first preference in a sim! As I am walking to my Lanc.

Yea, they are still goin' strong!

I go every fall - I just went in October. I always take a ride in the biplane. Even my wife loves it! She said that for our next venture she was not against opening some sort of historical aviation/transportation theme park! Heheh. That would kick ass!

I should record the engine sounds next time - I have a portable digital audio recorder...

Nuum,

I do have a bunch of photos of cockpit detail. And video of the planes flying.

Most of the reproduction cockpits are not as acurate as the outside of the plane - they tend to get practical on you.

In answer to the questions:

I used Hippy's tools and AC3D with Hippies plugins and OP Studio. In a draw program I drew cross sections, plan and elevation views of the various parts to put into AC3D. Most parts were made by making a poly in the shape of the cross section and then extruding to however many segments I thought I would need to follow the curves of the part. I then moved the points around in columns or individually to conform to the plan and elevation drawings. The texture is just something I found on the web; I don't know what squadron it represents. I'm up to 1500 polys, but that includes most of the low detail Fokker parts that switch in at various distances. I haven't done the rotating engine yet; I may do a textured disc that rotates when the engine's on. The flight model will model a rotary engine, though to what extent the game engine will produce the desired effects, I don't know.

I didn't know Kopper was into WW1 airplanes; someone will have to do a bomber for him - perhaps a DH9, often referred to as "the flaming coffin" or "flying coffin" or something like that. (You should see the pictures, Kopper, when you click on the link; they just take forever to load.)

Nuum: I'll e-mail the Replicraft information to you this evening. If you want to send me anything by e-mail you can just click on the mail icon on my posts for the address.

Zoycite,

The SE5a now has a skin you can do - it is in the SE5a/textures folder called plane.tif.

This basic texture map may change in the future, but you can fool with it!

Sadly all four wing halfs use the same texture -I'm having problem selecting just the top/bottom of the wing in AC3D in order to give them sperate textures. This is mostly because I built the wing dihedral into the wing LOD as oposed to just rotating it in OpenPlane studio.

The left/right fuse use the same texture - the front radiator is there as well. Horizontal stabalizer has same texture on top and bottom, but rudder has independant textures on each side. To texture the rudder, edit rudder.tif. There is now way to texture the bottom of the fuse

It is a start at least
