Well, Ive been playing around with Doles first Akagi(the second one does not permit take offs at game launch). I shrunk it to its real world size:109 ft wide, 855 ft long. I made the cables as part of the original LOD, and it does appear that they will work. I've been able to CRASH a few zeros on the carrier without them going over the side. The gear hits the wire, and they usually flip right over and stop hehe. I think it's just a matter of getting the height of the cable's right for 1, and perhaps making the arrest system its own LOD, and playing around with the Material list. I also looked at Whirlwinds carrier, it looks pretty damn good, we will have at least two realistically sized working Japanese carriers in the very near future thanks to the work by Dole, and Whirlwind. By the way Whirlwinds carrier allows take offs too. I don't know whats the deal with Doles new akagi, but it just won't allow you to start on the deck.IP: Logged |

Archy,Make a separate lod for the cable and add a DOF so that it moves forward when a certain force is exerted on it then breaks when it reaches past the limit. Here is an example of the code to do this: [DOF:320336:80] 1 ; kind x y z ; origin x y z ; axis -y +y ; min max ####(dofSpring 3500 dofDamp 25 dofBreak 5) # [Group:320424:5092] 122 ; Group number [LOD:320432:1768] ; lod140.fsd / .lod 140 ; LOD number [Translate:325236:12] x y z [Model:325256:28] 159 ; modelname: cable 140 ; LOD number -1 ; no LOD specified -1 ; no LOD specified -1 ; no LOD specified -1 ; no LOD specified -1 ; no Parts specified [ENDGroup] 122 ; Group number You will have to adjust the values of dofSpring, dofDamp, and dofBreak for the plane.
Maybe you can also make another dof that let you move it above and below the deck. IP: Logged |

now we put a hook on the back and bam there you go, or we could just use the tail wheelIP: Logged |

if you set up DOFs for the carrier, then you will need someone to control the carrier in online missions.------------------ Cheers! Jaguar www.fshangar.com IP: Logged |

I've been messin with the akagi too, doing the same thing =)...I have been messing with the cable and the hook alot. I made the cable 3 inches thick, and it is about 3 inches up off the deck. Now all that has to be done is the dof be added =)...Yall are a step ahead of me, but I gotta surprise for yall =)FarmerJoe IP: Logged |

Yall know how yall said that you can't takeoff from the new carrier? Well guess what in real life it would have been a bitch to take off from the akagi just straight off of it...Thats why they faced the carrier into the "wind" key word there =) then the plane would takeoff into the wind and the wind would hold em up! I was thinkin bout that and I figured it out...Jack the wind up in the mission and take off from the carrier with the carrier facing into the wind. Your in for a shock! You also have to remember that winds offshore are a bitch too!FarmerJoe IP: Logged |

FarmerJoe,That's why the Zeros can take off halfway down the deck. http://www.erols.com/mposis/CARRIER.jpg IP: Logged |

Ok, I got the CableArrest in its own lod, and I gave it some dof, spring + dampening properties. Still not quite working. The cables(4 of them actually) are about even with the middle of the landing gear wheels(spit) on the deck, but the planes still tend to go right through the cable(sometimes with a slight bounce. I am testing this by having a spit start on the deck, and then I switch to outside view, and start engine and release break(no throttle up). The plane just rolls through, it may hop a little on one or two of the cables. My dofs are along the yaxis which should be along the length of the deck. I used the dampening/spring properties from the landing gear of a p38. Any ideas? if we had a plane with an actual hook, it would be better, but I would think the cable itself would stop a plane from moving forward at the landing gear provided the plane was not throttled up. Archy,Yeah, I think we need a hook on the planes. I will put one on the Zero but I can't do it right away. I think the cable needs obBodypts so you may need to add this before the [Translate] line: [Comment:336849:248] (obProto 'CTire) (tireBrake) (phyLBS 25) (onDetach (obKillDelay 240)) (plus (phyCylZInertia 0.897429,0.897429,0.196336 phyCG -0.0111974,0,7.45058e-09)) (obBodyPts (ptProto 'CTirePt ptTireABS ptTireRadius .4757215 ptTireWidth .360892 verts 0,0,0)) #### Make the ptTireRadius the radius of the cable and the ptTireWidth the length of the cable.

I already got a zero with a hook on it =), it works too, zero comes in about 80 mph hook glides across the deck, grabs the wire and slams the aircraft down on the deck =) stopping it instantly since I aint gotta dof on it =), but I need to work on the hook a little more, made the cable to where it was 4-5 inches off the deck, very nice =). If yall want to take a look at them, I will post a link to the site I am getting ready to slam together after I touch the cable up some more! Also guess what guys...Where I live we have the Lexington! Yep we got that old chick just sittin down in our bay filled up with sand and she's the museum on the water. So I can take some measurments of er and ask some of the ole timers around there that hang out, take measurments of the cable assembly and everything, then we would have lots of information! I think us "carrier boys" should work on this one together and bring the Lexington back from my bay and put her back on Midway where she belongs out on the open sea.yall take'd easy now FarmerJoe [This message has been edited by FarmerJoe (edited 12-04-1999).] IP: Logged |

FarmerJoe,That was fast! I would like to get the carrier with the wire. I am planning to do another Japanese carrier (complete w/ elevators, AA and hangars) in the future after I am done with a few more planes. Thanks for all the work. IP: Logged |

FarmerJoe,I made the Zero with a retracting tail hook but it also seem to have problems with collision points. When I extend the hook down the end goes underground.

I am having trouble with collision points myself - anyone have any insights to how these function? Will a collision point detect collisions from all directions? Will a collision point never fall through the Earth? Collision points have nothing to do with damage, right? Damage is per polygon, correct? I will continue to fiddle with collision points - my SE5a has bad ground handleing, and the collision points I think I am adding correctly do not prevent parts of the plane from sinking into the ground... I must be making some mistake in placement... ------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE! IP: Logged |

we could always have the big carrier made a little wider too and call it the shinano i think that was the name it was the 3rd hull form the yamato and the mushashi. IP: Logged |

Anyone else apart from FarmerJoe get the Zero to trap? I was trying for ages last night without success, although I did manage to "land" on the lower deck One little problem is that the impact of the Zero hitting the water, after it tips off the side, causes three Akagis to explode! Makes it kinda hard for the rest of the flight to make a landing.

The Zero is very nose heavy wich makes it impossible to land with the tail down. If you move the engine's centre of gravity back (alot) it will be easier. However, I find it still sinks through the deck.IP: Logged |
