I wonder if MH and team could be planning on extending OpenPlane to include those things that apply to non-plane objects, and are missing from SDOE(again: movable ground units, online controllable ships/people/vehicles). Then they (Inertia)create an engine that supports this new OpenWorld Object set(part of which is OpenPlane). And then they either license the Engine to developers, or sell it outright to gamers interested in developing in OpenWorld.
Of course, if they were to sell on CD to gamers, they would include the existing Aircraft and Vehicles, and objects currently in SDOE. So you would already have a flight sim, with so so much more. A true virtual battlefield! I would think that the gamer route would be the best route, because if you first establish an audience, the publishers will be knocking down your door to get a piece of the pie.

The one thing here I really think is missing is moving ground and sea targets - like the ones that were in A10-Attack! Those were great. If we could have tanks fighting on the ground, and moving ships - cool!

Maybe if the OpenPlane cummunity can churn out enough planes, MH can sped time doing what only he can do - improve and otherwise update the OpenPlane engine! Add movement for ground targets, sun, time of day, slightly more sound scripting capability, and most important of all, magneto switched engine throttle controls for WWI planes!
