I'm using Hippie's plugins to change the triplane to a Camel and have run into a problem adding ailerons to the lower wings.

I can use the "add new model" tool to add a model to the heirarchy, but can't figure out how to change the name from "new model." When I export and build, I get an invalid sm file.

Can anyone tell me how to use this tool properly? I can just copy and paste the upper ailerons in OPS, but I need to add them in AC3D so I can texture them. I could extract the complete model and put it back into AC3D, but I would rather not as I understand there is a slight degradation of the lods every time you do that.

The degradation thing I think you are talking about has to do with rounding on the matrix values. This was a suspect for a while in the "my FM's gone to shit" investigation but it turned out to have nothing to do with it. The changes to the matrix are due to calculation rounding and amount to less than 1/10000th of a foot deviation and IMO shouldn't be a problem either visually or FM wise.

To make my SE5a I built the top wings (with ailerons) first from the Fokker wings. Then I simply copied and pasted them to make the lower wings. Since the ailerons are "children" objects they will be copied along with the "parent" wing.

Then I opened the lower wings and ailerons in AC3D to be updated.

Now that you have new names for the lower wings and ailerons, you will need to update some properties to make it work correctly. In my case I had ULWing1 and URWing1 with LAileron1 and RAilron1. Your lower wings will still be trying to use the old Raileron and LAileron for control surfaces - this just needs to be updated. Also make sure the main plane object points to the correct wing objects in the wing list.

Post any and all questions! Anything I can do to help get more WWI planes up and flying!!! I'm just begining OpenPlane, but I will help where I can.

Also I learned a bunch more about texturing using AC3D - this will be posted at my site:

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I'll just take the model from OPS with all the ailerons and put it back in AC3D for texturing. I was a little paranoid about the integrity of the LODs as I am making them using a set of actual Sopwith blue prints (yes, I know it's a bit weird that I should have such a thing)and the 3d model is very accurate. I'd post a screen shot, but I am still figuring out how to set up some web space I've just acquired.
