As confusing as the whole Warhawk / Tomahawk / Kittyhawk thing is, I think Kittyhawk is correct for my RAF purposes. I just have to Anglicize everything! For whatever reason, the USAAF called them Warhawks and the RAF dubbed them Kittyhawks. Go figure! For those interested, my best research says of P-40 equivalents:Model = British Designation
P-40 = Tomahawk Mk I
P-40B = Tomahawk Mk IIA
P-40C = Tomahawk Mk IIB
P-40D = Kittyhawk Mk I
P-40E = Kittyhawk Mk IA
P-40F = Kittyhawk Mk II / Mk IIA
P-40M = Kittyhawk Mk III
P-40N = Kittyhawk Mk IV
Generally speaking, Kittyhawks (P-40E through P-40N) were more slender in appearance and had decidedly different looking engines than the earlier Tomahawks. For the record, my scheme is from a Kittyhawk I and the plane in the game is technically a P-40F / Warhawk (USAAF designation) / Kittyhawk II (British designation).
The only real difference between the P-40F and the Kittyhawk II that I can dig up is that the Kittyhawk II had a Packard-built Merlin engine. I don't know what the P-40F had. Until we get a honest Kittyhawk, I'm just going to go on Anglicizing (am I spelling that correctly?)!
Wildcat = Martlet, Hellcat = Gannet, Avenger = Tarpon . . .
Someone stop him!!!
