I'm so pissed I put this in flame wars. I just
heard that members of the news media posed as
firefighters and rescue workers to get near
the wreakage of the WTC. Just when I thought
this group could stoop no lower they managed
to come up with a new whale shit stunt. Thankfully
these bastards were arrested. I hope they
throw the book at them.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm...

That makes me wonder why they weren't letting the media close enough to cover the story.

And anyone who responds "for their safty" better not be any of the people who feel its not the goverments job to take care of people.

Its the medias job to bring the story to the people, its kinda hard to do when the goverment won't let them.

The media always goes covert to get the story.

What would be really cool would be if they put tiny cameras on the rescue workers and then from afar watched and commented on the ongoings.

Rescue Cam!!!!

There have been numerous reports that the place is littered with body parts. Is that what you want to see Spanky? Would you want to see it if some of those parts belonged to your new baby or your mother? That's what you are asking American's to watch. Yeah, that would be real "cool".

Fox News already announced that they have film of the recovery operation which they refuse to show because it's graphic nature. This is not a government conspiracy. It's a matter of taste and respect for the dead and their families. Your ignorance of how America works is astounding.

You must be disappointed that the film showing people jumping out of the WTC didn't follow them down to the final splat!

No I'm not asking for body parts.

Blur them out or don't air that footage as Fox didn't.

But they could be capturing the good stuff, the people they find, the evedince found.

Just how horrible it all is (besides the dead people and such).

I just don't like how they hold back people trying to get the story out.

Besides it seems we have all seen TONS of bodies on TV newscasts, it just seems its usually not from stuff that has happened in the US. Take that as you will...

Just because I'm looking at the other side of the issue doesn't mean that I'm your enemy Jerry, as much as you try to make me one.

Oh yeah, notice I said RESCUE CAM!

NOT carnage cam, body part cam or some nonsense.

I want to see the rescues. As does the rest of the world I'm sure.

My pet peaves about the media on tuesday was how they kept repeating "we have one confirmed death" all morning, after the towers had collapsed. And the reporters on the scene saying "this may be the worst disaster I've seen". Way to report the facts, guys.

Guilianni isn't always my favorite, but he's been great, really an inpirational leader. His emotional honesty and strength have been outstanding.

Yeah, it is surreal Lothar to hear them say 179 confirmed deaths when everyone knows there are thousands....but we all know what they mean.

It's like the term "alleged". They catch a guy hacking up a body and they call him the alleged killer.

No Spanky, you're not my enemy. But you do piss me off when you keep saying (in several other posts) that this attack is America's fault because some people in the world hate us....that we should make them like us. If it's our fault why is the rest of the world lining up on our side? What do you know that the rest of world doesn't?

Hell, our own Smokey hates anyone who is rich and powerful. This can be easily extrapolated to other people's feelings about the US. So what do we do, stop being so powerful? Give our wealth away?

You think it's a coincidence that the countries which hate us the most also represent everything America is against...dictatorship, religous and cultural intolerance. Most of the Western World has the same politics as we do (or very similar) but we represent the biggest and most powerful, so we are the target of this hatred. We are the symbol of the freedom which would destroy their extremist beliefs if their own people were free. It's not what we do that causes such hatred, it's what we are........

with one major exception, our support of Israel. And we will NOT abandon Israel to placate these extremists. You keep saying Israel stole their land. The UN gave them the land in 1947. I didn't see the planes smashing into the UN building just a few block away! And the Jews have been in the middle east and the area known today as Palestine as long or longer than the Muslims, or haven't you heard of Moses?

You say we shouldn't take sides in the Israeli conflict? Why not? What other middle eastern democracy is there to support? What other middle eastern country has been our friend and supported us for over 50 years? Maybe you think abandoning your beliefs and your friends to avoid being disliked by your avowed enemies is the smart thing to do but I don't and neither do most Americans. This is where you and I really part company.

Everyone accuses us being only interested in middle eastern oil. How much oil are we getting from Israel? After thousands of years of enslavement and persecution and genocide the world owes the Jews a little piece of sand and rock they can call their own. I believe this to the core of my soul and if we have to take on the whole world to protect Isreal we should. And if we have to nuke a few countries to do it we should. My strong feeling about this is one reason I get so pissed at DanW when he calls me a racist and links me to the anti-Semitic KKK.

America takes sides because most of the Arab world has vowed to destroy Isreal. When they change their tune, we can resume being neutral...but not until then!

Jerry please don't hijack the thread.

Make a new thread named, why spanky is wrong, or spanky the anti-american.

I thought we had a good subject going.

If you move it I will respond.

Otherwise I'm not going to read it.

I was hoping this thread would be all about the media and such.

Jerry, both the Palistinians and Jews claim religious right to have soverignty in Jeruselem. Both are willing to die to be there, and both are willing to sacrifice thier children to live there. This will probably continue until one or the other is wiped out.

As long as we are involved in the region we can expect to catch some of the shit. I'm not saying its our fault, but it should and has been expected.

You're the one who said I was treating you like the enemy. What does that have to do with the media? I was only responding to you.

Lothar, in case you're not aware, Jerusalem is a holy city for Christians too. There are Christian churches in Jerusalem which co-exist with the synagogs. Each year thousands of Christains travel from abroad on pilgrimages to Jerusalem.

Have you heard about the Israelis denying Christain access and claiming absolute sovereignty with them? Of course not. Because the Christains aren't claiming Jerusalem as their own, trying to remove it from Israeli territory. If there is a problem with sharing Jerusalem the problem is with the Palestinians, not the Jews. The Jews in Israel have demonstrated a willingness to live peacefully with other religions and to share holy sites. Have the Palestinians?

I think the Palestinians would find a Palestine state with Jerusalem as it's capital to be an acceptible deal.

Neither party is going to move, and neither party finds the other controlling the area to be acceptible. Both sides are willing to live in rubble to secure that spot on the map.

I'm sure they would....and Sadaam would find annexing Kuwait acceptable too. Now tell me why the Israeli's would do that? Why wouldn't the Palestinians be willing to share the city if it means so much to them as a place of worship? What's the compromise on their part?

Jerry, they would do it if they respect and want peace (its seems they don't unless they get there way) the compromise on the other side would be to stop making war with the Israeli's (once again I don't belive they actually want peace either).

Jerry, I'm not arguing who's fault the conflict in the region is, just that it exists and shows no sign of going away. If we are going to be involved in the region, we need to be prepared for these sorts of attacks. If the cost of these attacks is too high, maybe we should rethink our involvement in the region.

When it comes to defending our Allies there is no cost too high! This is what America stands for.

You sound like the isolationists before WWII who didn't want to get involved in a "European" war. Well, we just had our "Pearl Harbor". It's time to get with the program Lothar. Shit or get off the pot!

So about the media....

This thread is SO on topic...

I'd really love to talk about the topic on hand but it seems impossible since everyone just wants to talk about there warmongering.

BTW Jerry, starting a new thread when you change the topic is just common sense and to do otherwise is rude (not that I would expect that much from you) I'm sure when Smokey started the thread he didn't want to talk about the middle east situation.

Sorry I guess I was stupid to reply to your post in a thread you HIJACKED.

Wheres that plastic knive of yours? Ya got smokey tied up in the bathroom?

After you said this today....."I hope it does turn into another nam, I hope you do get your ass handed back to ya.".....I do consider you my enemy. Watch your six.

You guys are big boys, you can talk about
anything you want.

I was glad to see today that it looks like
NY is taking a real tough stand on unauthorized
people in the disaster area. Arrest and prosecution
to the fullest. I hope they follow through
on the news peopla all ready arrested.

Spanky, it is my feeling that the news media
is doing an adaquate job of covering this
event from authorized distances. The reason
they are not being allowed closer is their
own fault. It has been learned from past
events that they will stoop to anything to
get a story. The most that could be accomplished
is that they would hinder the rescue/recovery
efforts. You see how they act now. How would
it be if they were bothering every firefighter
asking them for a comment and sticking the
micorphone in the face of anyone pulled from
the rubble? This is what makes these acts
very disrespectful to those people who have
suffered such a great loss.

For god knows what reason I was kinda annoyed at the she reporter that bragged about sneaking past the police lines to get into "ground zero". Mind you, nobody seemed to care, but fatigue and stress will do that to you.
The firemen and coppers have enough to do without reporters getting in the way. Imagine the howling if the stupid cow or her cameraman had fallen into one of the holes like the firemen did the other day. Keeping those fools out of the way, IS for their own good.
For the most part, I suspect they see this as a career making opportunity. With the airlines not flying, your Dan Rathers, et al couldn't get there. This left the local hacks to do the talking head act. Most of 'em would never be on national TV otherwise.

IF this happened (and I have no reason to doubt it) they will pay. There are penalties for this type of thing especially when it involves a federal crime investigation (which technically this is even though emphasis is currently on "recovery")....

Getting back to the original topic, the thing that disgusts me about the news media right now is how, since their grilling after the election last year, they have laid off the Bush administration for a whole host of things which they would have crucified Clinton or Bush Sr. for, I think in an effort to somehow seem more noble, as if to say "Look, we've changed".

Starting with their obsessive coverage of Gary Condit and now their reporting things without confirming them in order to scoop the other news services, they have proved that they really haven't changed. I'll stick with NPR on the radio and the BBC on TV (when I can get it). They're not perfect, but they seem to be the best.

I still say helmet mounted rescue cams would be great for this type of thing. The media can get close action but not get in the way or in any trouble.

About seeing any carnage.

I was watching a news story talking about mourning. It was saying some people NEED to see just how bad stuff was to be able to recover.

Some people need to see it and some people need not to see it, its a personal thing.

Just like the weekend after it some people wanted to get it out of their heads and some people wanted to be together in prayer and such.

Yeah, i find some of the media coverage distressing too, though its hard to know where to draw the line. Theres a tragic story being shown in UK news of an english woman who lost her son on the second plane, and witnessed it live without knowing (as I'm sure did many others) Now, she can't stop watching it as it is constantly repeated. She said (through tears) that she simply can't. That sounds like hell.
On a different story, I heard that some New York hotel owners doubled their rates immediately after the tragedy. Is this true? If it is, I think the media should publicly destroy them..

On a good note I heard some Canadian places were giving a better then normal exchange rate to people stuck in Canada, when their planes where diverted here.

Burkey, Yeah I can see how it would be distrubing to some people and I agree. I was just passing the info along, some people NEED to see it to be able to recover.
