Sept. 1 is almost here. Time to get down to the
nitty-gritty. I think the Yankees are going
to kick major ass and not even bother with
the names.

Jerry, I've listened to enough of your shit.
It looks to me like the Giants are short on
both gas and time.

Smokey, if you'd quit supporting the rich fat cat owner's teams with obscene payrolls like the Yankees and support a working man's team like the Giant's, I could almost like you. Steinbrener is worse for baseball than Gates is for software.

Pure capitalism Jerry. The guy that pays the
most money gets the best team............sometimes!

Nat, unfortunately you are absoluty right.
The Mariners have given the Yankees hell over
the years and they have a good team this year.

When did you become a fan of the working man?

BTW the Giants lost to AZ last night.

'Course the Yankees lost too, dammit.

I am a great fan of the working man! Unlike you, I also know that white collar and professional people work too. In your world only blue collar union memembers should be called "working men".

It's the non-working man sucking on the national nipple that I have no use for.

Now that I answered your question, answer mine. How can you root for a team that is the Microsoft of Baseball owned by the Bill Gates of Baseball, as much as you hate the success and accumulation of wealth by a few?

Ah baseball, sucks ass. I actually would rather watch curling cause its more exciting.

Actually me and mad dog have actually grabed some rocks from the shore of a frozen over stream and played curling, drawing on the rings with a can of spray paint. and using a kitchen broom.

I do like playing baseball but you spend too much time standing around or sitting on your ass waiting for your time to hit.

Keep in mind though that I don't really like watching any sports as I find watching is alwasy boring as hell.

Really the only spectator sport I like is rally racing, specialy in car camera.

Personally I really do think the crazy amounts of money being paid to people is getting a little overboard and I don't see how the smaller teams can compete.

But really what can you do? I mean its the free market system at work jerry, how can it go wrong?

I have to grit my teeth while one rich guy
wins but I just think of all the other rich
guys he's screwing by trying to buy a team.
Besides Stienbrenner makes baseball players
rich and they are the working men of baseball,
and they are fellow union members.

I like the Yankees because I've been a Yankee
fan every since I was a kid in the '50s.

Good answer Smokey, especially the last part.

So you must love Bill Gates for wiping out all those software fat cats, right?

Spanky, baseball is not free enterprise. It has been given status by the US Government as a legal monopoly which allows owner collusion and revenue sharing. Cities and states subsidize the stadiums - except in San Francisco where they have the only major league baseball stadium built entirely with private financing.

And by the way Spanky, baseball is boring if you must have lots of action and no thinking to be entertained, like a children's cartoon. As a group, baseball fans are among the most intelligent of sports fans in the world.

Hey man the next time your on a back road that you have never driven on before kick out your passangers and throttle up to 100MPH plus and tell me that you don't have to think.

I'm not saying it takes action to keep me interested. What I'm saying is that its boring to watch sports. I just don't like to watch.

Hockey is supposed to be one of the fastest sports. Guess what ITS BORING. I can't stand to watch it.

Basketball? BORING.

Soccer? BORING.

Football? BORING.

Name me a spectator sport and I'll probly find it boring.

I find them all boring cause I like to DO rather then watch.

I love playing hockey, I used to play when I was a kid and I have thought about joining a local team again, but I NEVER watch it.

I would have to bring a book just for something to do if I somehow found myself at a sporting event.

"As a group, baseball fans are among the most intelligent of sports fans in the world."

By whos standards? Wheres the scale for measuring that?

Just because they can spout off this stat and that stat and who played this position for that team over those years doens't make them intelligent, It makes them knowlegable. There is a difference.

Rally racing looks like a blast to actually DO...

I went to one of those go-cart tracks at the batting cages the other day. The track was pretty good, with lots of hills and sloping turns. What it really needed though (besides cars about 3x as fast) was some dirt sections.

I should root for the Yankees (being one of my home teams), but its hard since they are such asskickers recently.

Watching the Mets come from behind against Atlanta two years ago was some of the best baseball I've seen.

Jerry, it's been awhile since you've been to a game hasn't it? Go to one and take a good long look at what is around you... then, if you can tell me with a straight face that baseball produces intelligent fans any more than any other sport... well, I'll buy another stadium dog and beer! Then I will proceed to figure out exactly how many people in that crowd can actually count to 20 without using fingers and toes... and it won't take but a minute or two either!

lol... smart baseball fans... that's a hoot!

So Stark, you have the ability to determine a person's intelligence by looking them? Wow! What a gift. We can throw out all the school tests and just have you walk through the classrooms and hand out grades. Just think the money we can save on SAT tests alone.

Do photographs work? I'm sure you could get a real good job at a top university as Admissions Director. All you would need is a photo of each applicant. Forget grade transcripts and application forms.

Great proof.

Never mind the fact that I don't like watching almost any sport.

Ever heard how people of high intelligence bore easily?

They get bored if not challenged in school and such?

Does that tell you anything?

Maybe baseball fans are intelligent, like I said I need to see the scale and the way of measuring first. But is that compared to other sports fans? Maybe all sports fans are stupid, maybe Baseball fans are just the smartest of the stupid people?

Not to knock sports fans cause I know some of you other guys are, and I don't think sports fans are actually stupid, they just enjoy something I don't.

I'm just trying to prove to Jerry that its a worthless statement.

Well Spanky, if you're looking for some sort of statistical abstract obtained by giving I.Q. tests to all sports fans then my statement is worthless. In your eyes then I guess all opinions based on personal observation and statements of others are worthless. I feel sorry for someone who can't extrapolate from observations. I guess to you if it isn't in a book then it can't be true. Pitty you have so little imagination.

But hear me out. I have been a sports fan, especially baseball, for over 40 years. I have known and talked sports with hundreds if not thousands of people. Almost without exception, the "true" baseball fan is of above average intelligence with a real appreciation and understanding of statistics and the subtle nuances of baseball and the history and tradition of baseball. I'm not talking about LA Dodger fans who show up because it's the "in" thing to do and then leave in the 7th inning to beat the traffic home.

If you concede that the people who dedicate a big part of their lives playing a sport are fans of that sport, then tell me which professional or college level athlete do you consider brighter...football players, basketball players, or baseball players? Baseball hands down. How many colleges get into trouble with scholastically ineligble players in baseball? I haven't heard of any, but you hear about it a lot in football and basketball.

Retired professional athletes often try to go into announcing as a career. How many football and basketball players make it? Not many, but there are a multitude of ex-pro baseball players now announcing the game at both the national and local level. Why? Because baseball players (who are fans) know how to string a sentence or two together without a script.

Name me one non-baseball sports expert with the intellect of George Will.

Now Spanky, I grant you I haven't covered non-US sports. Perhaps you would like tell me about the mental prowess of the British soccer (football) fans who just got arrested in Germany.

Besides, Spanky. You grew up in a country where baseball is an afterthought. What gives you the right to question my opinion about baseball fans when you probably don't even know very many, if any. Where's your proof that baseball fans aren't among the world's smartest sports fans. You admit you don't like any sport, let alone have an ability to evaluate sport's fans, so on what basis do you question my statement? I wouldn't presume to judge the intelligence of curling or dog sleding fans (sorry, can't think of any other Canadian sports) so how can you be so presumtious as to judge the intellect of baseball fans?

Yes thats what I want IQ tests at all the games

HEHE

I'm not saying I can't extrapolate, or make personal observations, but you can't make a very good observation of my intelligence because of what you have seen me write on this board, hell sometimes we agree on stuff, that means you must have a little moron in ya if your calling me one.

When you said,

"Spanky, the fact that you don't like baseball tells me all I need to know about the intelligence level of baseball fans. "

You were saying that based on your experince with me, ONE PERSON. Thats not exactly how stats work. You have to do a broad sampling.

And even if you can find intelligent baseball fans it doens't make them all smart. Not in the slightest.

Now you have changed it from baseball fan to "TRUE" baseball fans, Please give me a discription of what that fan would be!

Yes I would concede that the players are fans of the games, but they are in a class removed from the regular fans, now if you want to say the players of baseball are smart, I think I could agree with you.

I have no clue who George Will is, and I can't think of ANY other sports experts cause I don't pay attention to any of it. If I could choose channels selectively I wouldn't even have TSN(Canadian equivlent of ESPN) on my TV, I would only have speedvision, just for the rally coverage, ( I also hate nascar because its driving fast in a circle for hours )

About the British fans, well that just tells me that they are fanatics LOL, whens the last time you ever seen a so called baseball FAN get in a fight over a game? LOL

I'm joking BTW they are stupid to fight over it.

About baseball in Canada and sports in General. Theres TONS of baseball and baseball fans around here, My dad has always played on a team while in the military, he watches it all the time too. I played baseball as a child, like I said I like to play it, just not watch.

BTW a Canadian team has won the (so called) world series 2 times in a row, so there goes your theory that no one watches or plays it up here.

I'm not saying baseball fans are stupid, I just asked you to prove that they are smart. I don't have to prove the negative, you have to prove the positive.

Canadian sports, are Hockey, Basketball, and ringette, which is a wacky form of hockey for girls that was actually started in this city and has spread around Canada, Maybe the US for all I know.

Remember I never said that baseball fans are stupid, you said they were smart and I asked you to prove where you got this fact from.

I also said that baseball sucks ass, and to me watching it does, I'm sure I'm intitled to my opinion right?

'Now Spanky, I grant you I haven't covered non-US sports. Perhaps you would like tell me about the mental prowess of the British soccer (football) fans who just got arrested in Germany' - So what are you saying, Jerry?
People with high intelligence don't do silly things when their passions are raised? People with high intelligence don't get arrested? (I guess that doesn't explain my clean sheet then!) Ever heard of the idea that people with high IQ are sometimes low on common-sense? Besides, a top-ranking German copper has announced that a large amount of the disturbance was caused by German fans,as well as English fans (not British, Jerry, there are differences, seen 'Braveheart'? I personally know of several people who would STRONGLY object to being linked to those fans by nationality!).
I think the thing that sticks in my craw, apart from your implication that football (soccer) fans are thick, is you saying 'Baseball fans are amongst the most intelligent in the world. Oh and I happen to be a baseball fan, by the way'
Judging a fans intelligence by the sport they support is almost as bad as judging their intelligence by looking at them, something you accused Stark of doing.
