To ask a question. I always thought executions were ordered or stayed by the courts. How does his royal highness Ashcroft have the authority to stay McVeigh's execution until June 11? Anybody know? Goth?? IP: Logged |

Ashcroft is the US Attorney General. You're right, our state governor in Ill. suspended all executions to investigate the process to insure it was being carried out accurately. Beyond that governors can completely pardon a person. Usually a stay of execution comes from a court. IP: Logged |

McVeigh was convicted in a Federal Court and sentenced to death based on Federal capital punishment guidelines. A stay of execution can be issued by a Federal Judge, Supreme Court Justice / Justices or the US Attorney General. IP: Logged |
