It turns out that the states that supported Gore also support the Bush majority states. How come all those Republicans can't make the Midwest and South pay thier own bills? FLAME ON!!! ![]() Dec. 15, 2000 | WASHINGTON (AP) -- Billions of tax dollars flowed from Northeastern and Great Lakes states to the South and West last year, according to an annual Harvard University study of federal spending released Friday. Generally, Southern states received billions more dollars from the federal government than they paid in taxes. States in the Northeast and around the Great Lakes, along with Nevada and California, were the biggest losers. The 10 largest "donor" states had a combined outflow of $93 billion in fiscal year 1999, up from $87 billion the year before, the report found. Overall, 31 states gained and 19 states lost. Far more military bases are in the south than the frigid north. It allows year round training and exercises. Any more questions? IP: Logged |

Defense spending is part of it, but the per capita spending on non-military discretionary programs and social security is also skewed towards the south and midwest. For instance, Texas gets 60% more non-defense discretionary spending than New Jersey. North Carolina gets 30% more non-defense federal spending per capita than New Jersey. Meanwhile, North Carolina pays $2100 per person less in federal taxes, Texas pays $1200 less. This is how the votes went: IP: Logged |

well dont know what this has to do with it, but I wish california and florida would have to pick up their own tabs. why should I pay so much money for insurance because somebody wants to live in a place where their home gets destroyed by fire, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes or some other act of god? Lothar, you can read into this anything you want, but states with high minority populations (blacks in the south, hispanics in Texas) tend to receive more Government welfare, medical and education aid. Would you be happier if the Government cut off all this aid to make state spending equal? If you are so against the redistribution of wealth why are you in favor of targeted tax cuts? Why not a flat tax? If you are against some states paying and others receiving, why not just keep the money in the states in the first place and take the Federal Government out of the equation entirely? As far as per capita taxes, look at per capita income. Thanks to the graduated tax policy of Democrats, people who earn more pay disproportionately more. Per capita incomes in the more industrialized northern states are higher. The end result is that they pay proportionately more taxes. Are you suggesting that we eliminate the graduated tax rates to equalize per capita taxes? Your answers to these questions should prove interesting. Are you really for equalizing or are you just on another Bush witchhunt? [This message has been edited by Jerry (edited 12-17-2000).] IP: Logged |

I'm on another Bush witchhunt ![]() I found the statistics interesting. They expose the common Republican double-standard. They say one thing for votes, and do another thing at home. If they are against federal money, stop accepting so much of it. Also, the non-defense discresionary funding I mentioned does not include welfare, social security or medicare. IP: Logged |

Well, let's see...it doesn't include defense, welfare, medical, education or social security. What's left? And even if your left over discretionary spending was exactly the same per capita, the disproportionate tax rates on higher incomes would still have some states paying more than others. And let's ask your question a little differently, if the Gore states are so in favor of sending money to Washington why don't they send more? If this situation is so terrible that the Republicans should fix it, what is your solution? Flat tax? Eliminate all government spending? Give out an equal amount of money to each state whether they need it or not? Only spend in each state what is taken from it - so the rich states get richer? IP: Logged |

Hmmmm.... Statistics. Just like Clintons definition of sex, statisics mean what they have been manipulated to mean. BTW - What is this crap about people in CA not carrying their load? 1/9th of the population of the US lives in CA. As far as earthquakes go, you stand a better chance of being flooded out in one of your "safe" states than you do of having your house destroyed in an earthquake in CA. Statistically speaking, of course.... IP: Logged |

These statistics show California to be getting screwed in taxes vs. payouts. Most of that is due to all of the base closures during the 90's. California had far and away the most base closures (something like 27). Also, as an ex-Californian I agree that people don't have a clue when it comes to what parts of the country are dangerous. California never has snow (not in any cities), hardly rains, never has hurricanes, and is mostly single-story buildings so even the earthquakes aren't very dangerous. How many people die in the midwest just because of the cold? IP: Logged |

Yes but on the negative side, California is full of hippies. IP: Logged |

Lothar! It must be a Christmas miracle!! I agree with everything you said in that last post. ![]() Being an ex-Californian myself, I still get a kick out of non-Californians shaking in their boots at the mere mention of an earthquake. All the while people are dying by the hundreds on icy roads in half the country. Throw in a few tornadoes, some spring floods and the hurricanes you mentioned and California looks blessed by mother nature. P.S. You couldn't pay me enough to move back. Hippies???? LOL Most of you don't know what Hippies really are. How many of you actually saw Haight-Ashbury in the 60's? The only place you find them now is along Telegraph Ave. in Berkley. I think it's some kind of an animal preserve. IP: Logged |

Earthquakes! Experienced 9 of em. Love em! Great fun... I was on the Golden Gate during the quake in `89... bets ride of my life! Course the city was bit messed up... bhut we had it straightend out for the most part in a week or two. Tornadoes on the other hand scare the hell out of me. Been through 5 of em as a kid back east (IL and NC). 4 in three years in Illinois on the shores of Michigan resulted in one totalled car (tree from 4 blocks away hit it), 2 new roofs and assorted furniture. Really ruins your day. Of course... if you look at Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Lousiana, Georgia, South Carolina, etc... how many natural disaster that caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages have occured over the last 8 years? Quite a few huh? I'll bet a big chunk of the spending is in FEMA relief funds. I bet if you went back and looked at Cali in 89 you'd find a big chunk of change came our way for the same reasons. BTW - if you're ever in an earthquake big enough to move parked cars across the street don't try the standing in the doorway routine - all you'll get for your trouble is building on top of you. Get as far away from every building as you can... a park is an excellent place if the trees aren't too big. Also, try not to be jogging when the quake hits... you tend to get some pretty nasty scrapes when you flop over like a drunken idiot...it is really quite hard to run when the ground isn't where you thought it would be. -Stark IP: Logged |
