This posted at CNN right now:

Bush's legal team filed a weekend motion seeking a halt to any manual recounts on the grounds that they are less reliable than automated counts.

Is not correct. The case is based on the fact that the other counties would not have their votes manually recounted as well and that would be a violation of their contitutionalk rights.

I agree with the judge, they have no case.

Still, this kind of reporting pisses me off.

Anywhere the vote is less than 10% apart should be recounted, and many states do it that way automatically. That is where we have states that are not finalized.
Yes the press are stupid.... we all know this.
I agree with what the injunction was for, but they should have done it in FL. These lawyers should have known that.
I also agree that if you are going to recount any place in a state, picking and choosing the counties is rather pathetic. It is true partisanism and designed to show what they want it to show. And that is completely transparent. But you know the Democrats, always up for making something look bad when it doesn't fly their way...
such is life....

Bush trusted the people until they voted for
Gore!! The machines are obviously not
accurate. I agree, recount by hand anywhere
that's close. By the way. What happened to
you republicans idea that the big bad
federal government interferes in everything?
The Bush team was quick enough to run to a
federal court to try and quash a state law.

I dont know why Bush put forward the case, I think it was a panic reaction to slow down the procces, Gore was clearly out maneauvering him legaly.

Hand counts are NOT as accurate as machines, but they can add many votes that the machine misses because they were not punched all the way as they should be. So in a way, hand counting is more accurate in that it will count votes that were not counted by the machine. But of votes counted by the machine, the machine is always much more accurate, no human error.

So recounting has one major effect: it will always magnify the results. The winner wil win by more. So if you only recount a democratic area, you are simply giving the victory to the democrat - no "democracy" is served in this case, Gore would just win thanks to clever legal thinking.

Bush is going to lose because he did not jump on board sooner - into the slime pit with Gore. He should have demanded an entire FL reount from day one, this recount woudl favor Bush for the same reason that the democrat only recount favors Gore...

Damned liberal press.

Now the press is reporting that the 5:00 deadline for voting today is imposed by Harris, not Florida law. Wrong! It is a law in florida designed to make sure the countied get off their buts and do their jobs quickly and efficiently. It was no surprise to any of the counties. They knew about and it has been enforced in the past in Florida. Just because a vote is close doesn't mean you can just chuck a law out the window.

The good news is that so far the courts have agreed that it is a law and not subject to "adjustment" by Harris. She has no choice but to enforce it unless truly mitigating circumstances can be demonstrated (and a recount is not a mitigating circumstance accourding to the court). An example of a mitigating circumstance is a hurricane, where reporting becomes literally impossible.

Yep.... and the federal suit was not a good idea, like I mentioned... they should have just made it a state thing in the first place.. but they are trying to be good, and not do something silly.... they have made good offers to the Democrat's who brushed them off with some snide and nasty remark.... please... and Warren Christopher? Hmmm... lets get the guy who has one of the worst reputations for truth and investigations in the country, and is one of the last reasons that the Kennedy assasination files aren't being released, is heading up the democrat side of this.... my god, how pathetic is that? They guy is older than god.... and I doubt very seriously he has the "Moral Character" I would want to represent this sort of thing....
and JT... go find the answer for yourself.. I am not the library....
