I know I don't step in here much but I had to get this off my chest. I was watching the news today and they were talking about the Texas seatbelt laws. Its bad enough that there are laws about wearing seatbelts, much less that you will get a ticket for not wearing it! I wear one all the time but, I don't think I should be required too. These laws are not for our own good. There are there because insurance companies don't want to pay the extra cost if you don't take every possible precaution and thats all there is to it! These lazy ass morons in the press just go along with this crap! It just like the commercial that is on about some insurance company's R&D department coming up with a floor covering that has better traction for grocery stores so you won't slip if a banana peel should happen to fall on the floor. Bullshit! They are trying to protect themselves from having to pay a settlement, and they couldn't give a rats ass about me, you, or anything else but there profit margin. I was born at night, but it wasn't last. I am so sick of having to give up my fun and freedoms because other people may not do the smart thing. Or because someone might get offened. This is just the beginning of my list. I am so tired of this shit, I am about to walk into traffic!!!!!!!!!!! Gunner IP: Logged |

All the morons driving around without seatbelts and riding around without helmets drive up car and health insurance for everyone else, and my insurance is already #&^% high enough. Gary Busey was about as anti-helmet as they get until he creased his melon and almost kicked it now he's a helmet advocate TS IP: Logged |

Yea Tail, I agree. Wearing a helmet to me is the only smart thing to do. The insurance companies try to make us think they are hurting financially. What a bunch of B.S. I just resent the hell out of being made to do something because other people aren't resposible. I guess I'm just tired of paying for other peoples problems Btw, I am feeling better now than when I posted. Some really funny stuff happened here at the office today that cheered me up Nice to vent here anyway Gunner [This message has been edited by Gunner (edited 07-13-2000).] IP: Logged |

Gunner, glad you're feeling better. ![]() I am confused by your rant though. You say you are tired of paying for other people's problems, but you don't want these other people to be told to do something (like wear seat belts) which minimizes those problems. How can you have it both ways? Where do you think insurance company money comes from? Your and my insurance premiums and the income they make from investing those premiums. If they have to pay out for injuries caused by people not wearing seat belts or helmets then your and my rates go up. And that's IF the injured party is insured! I just read a study that found that 25% of fatal auto accidents (that's 8,000 out of 32,000 deaths last year) involved drivers without a driving license! If they are so irresponsible that they drive without a license do you think they have insurance? Of course not. Guess who pays for their treatment when they don't have insurance? The taxpayer, again you and me. So whether they are insured or not, we pay for their injuries. The only solution is to reduce the injuries in the first place, and one way of doing this is to require seatbelts and helmets be worn and air bags and stronger bumpers and roll over standards and so on. Is that government interference in our lives. Yes. But as long as people refuse to voluntarily do what's best for society we will need some mechanism to modify behavior - like laws and enforcement of those laws. The debate will always be what is best for society and what laws do we really need. In the case of seat belts and helmets I think it's pretty obvious. IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. I totally agree with Jerry, Course I think that anyone who gets lung cancer from smoking should automatically null and void any health benifits or state health care. LOL About freedom. There has to be a line gunner. You will never be truly free until you can legally sell and trade kiddy porn. True freedom is anarchy, thats all there is to it. Society has to set a line for "REASONALBLE" freedom. that seems to include Seat belt laws which I personally have no problems with. Theres no argument that none of us have enough personal freedom but where you draw the line and where I draw the line isn't always going to match so we have some sort of compromise. Its kinda like the whole state/province, country, world. Is in one HUGE marrige. IP: Logged |

Spanky, do you think folks who have gotten Diabetes from eating nothing but white sugar treats and junk food should also remove themselves from the socialist-supported medical care programs also? Just a thought. Here in Missouri, it's illegal not to wear seatbelts, but I don't believe you can make a vehicle stop based solely on an officer noting visually that someone is not wearing their seatbelts. It's kind of like, "Oh, let's see...55 in a 35, and goodness! You're not wearing your seatbelt either, are you? Hee-hee..." I'll have to admit it's the only thing that made me start wearing them. My wife still never does, but four about the last 8 or 9 years I've worn them out of habit. Plus, if you drive the way I do, it keeps you from being slung back and forth inside, and lurching forward into the steering wheel. Mk10=225th IP: Logged |

Spanky here... MK - Yeah thats pretty much it. Everyone would default in one way or another. The drinkers, the smokers, overeaters. I just personally find it a little sickening that anyone who pays taxes has to pay for other peoples health care cause they are too stupid to take care of themselves. Course I guess that comes around in anything. As in people being to stupid to drive at an appropriate speed so we need speed limits and cops driving around. About the whole sugar thing. I think that whole link between candy and diabeties is a myth. But I havn't done any reasearch on it. If your trying to trip me up I would say the one place I would default would be That I ride my mountain bike with no helmet and break tons of road rules on it. Plus I'm not to carefull offroad. I don't think anyone could actually say they don't abuse or take chances with their bodies in some way though. I'm just saying maybe you should be directly responsable for that. If I owned an insurance company I sure don't want to have to pay your living costs for the rest of your life because you refused to wear your seat belt and now have no use of your arms and legs. If it was proved that the seatbelt would have saved you from that fate. BTW you will totally be stopped for no seatbelt here if the cop actually cares. If your a passanger in a car you only will be charged if your over 18, If your under 18 and you don't then the driver is charged i think for not making sure all your passangers where belted in. 18 might not be the right age but its somewhere the 14-18 age range. about motor bike helmets, theres no way in hell i would ever climb on a bike without one. Not even for a quick trip to the corner store.

Montana experimented with no speed limits. I had some fun down there.. it was like an autobahn with twisty narrow roads, rednecks and pickup trucks going Mach 5 They had to call an emergency out of session meeting to reinstate the speed limits so many people were getting killed. TS IP: Logged |

I lived in Germany for 3.67 years. Sweepingly generalizing: the Germans have a boat-load of laws, but they nominally rely on individual interaction to force people to conform/behave. If you are out-and-about in Germany, and you do something wrongly/offensively/stupidly/Americanly/loudly/joyfully/or extravagantly, you will receive the nastiest scorn possible in human culture from nearly every person around you. The Polizei (police) aren't out harassing members of the public in Germany, the people do a fine job themselves without the Polizei's help. On the Autobahn, if one doesn't drive with absolute precision, then he or she isn't going to be alive for long. Some may consider driving this way thrilling, and others scary; it was both for me. However, Americans' are not disciplined enough to drive without speed limits, nor are they disciplined enough to live without laws & law enforcement. PS. I'd take America over Germany any day. I've been riding/racing motorcyles for 27 years now and I've always said "If you got a $10.00 head get a $10.00 helmet". In some cases I don't think their head is worth that much! Himdog out IP: Logged |

Sun Tsu, you rock. Welfare rocks. Screw the fuck out of the system, screw it until it bleeds. Fuck the seatbelt laws, and fuck insurance. I got to pay some scum-sucking fuck-cunts my money because I want to drive? Get fucked. Here's how it is...guy driving car crashes into my daughter, cripples her, daughter gets cash. Big relief, not. Here's how it SHOULD be...guy driving car crashes into my daughter, cripples her, I kill driver with blow-torch and assume ownership of everything of his, including his nearest & dearest. End result of EVERYONE doing this? Nobody crashes anymore 'cos they're all driving at 30mph due to fear of consequences. Am I talking bollocks? So what. I couldn't give a fuck. I'm venting. And I feel better for it. One more thing...blow this whole fucking planet into the sun, NOW. Ah...that's better! Muhahaha!!! IP: Logged |
