Gee pops, not sure why you'd think we'd want to flame these. They look pretty nice. I think an awful lot of people are looking forward to the release of B-17 II, and hope it is very, very successful. The link is convenient though for those who may not participate in the B-17 II Forum on Bombs Away, and show there's some pretty neat stuff being worked on. You'll find that by and large we respect other people's opinions, and get over stuff pretty quick. Just don't leave your beer cooler unattended around us, or your wallet in plain sight. Spanky here.... Lo Pops. Took a gander and I must say that I thought B17-2 was going to be more of a jump forward in the graphics department. THe ground looks cool but only in a small circle that its in focus around the plane far out it gets all blury. They can't do everything. The aircraft by and large don't really look all that much better then SDOEs. And definatly not any better then we could do if we had those system requirments to work with. Someone said it would scale to lower systems but how can it do that if it does even scale to a k7 900? Other wise its looking cool, its looking and sounding more like a B17 virtual pilots dream which was its target so thats very good. THe personal management is going to be great too. I find the textures not looking that great. like the cockpits, they look great but they look like they are being held back by bad textures. Maybe the cockpit textures are just beta but maybe not. Please don't take this as a flame. Just some of my thoughts. I'm sure it will be a good game, If its going to be ground breaking which it seems like alot of people think it will be. Well I would have to say a HUGE maybe.

Well, the boyscout training in me felt that it is always best to be prepared. Guess it won't be the big leap that some had hoped. Plus, not to insult, but some will also have to upgrade. *yawn* IP: Logged |

Not bad. I would consider WWII fighters much better in the graphics area. As far as the cockpit detail goes, I'm not impressed. It could just be the jpg format. Prop out! IP: Logged |

Thanks Pops. I'm looking farward to B17II. I personal think it is going to be great. I got a password for your B17II fourm but I've just been lurking so far. Maybe I'll post a joke for you guys One question, why post it in the flame war? I don't think anyone will flame this.Himdog out IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Well actually Not that I like upgradeing cause I don't. But I just don't see why from those screen shots. It seems to be a system hog from what info we have right now. I'm hoping theres alot under its skin that is taking up all those CPU cycles. Maybe I have been spoiled by the PS2 screens but I just don't see what there is to drool about in those picks. The gameplay side of the game on the other hand is sounding great. But still not grabing my attention after the open format of SDOE, again I have been spoiled

Himdog, Jokes and more are welcome anytime. I placed it here not to upset anyone in the main forum. Off Topic may have been more apropo, but this area gives anyone that can't find anything good to say about B-17II the podium to try to bash the hell out of it if they can. So far, no one has hit it's weakest potentials in this thread. It will take a mans computer to run it in all it's glory. So should anything that is cutting edge. IP: Logged |

Spanky the Mad Dog Pilot |
Spanky here.. K maybe I haven't been clear enough LOL I don't think its cutting edge nor anywhere near any sharp edges. So what are "it's weakest potentials " ? Well besides that it only has one bomber and no openformat, and there won't be much to do after your sick of attack or defending a B17. IP: Logged |

When is this game ever gonna get released.....it looks killer? IP: Logged |

Spanks, "I don't think its cutting edge nor anywhere near any sharp edges." Your most welcome to your opinion. It has been duly noted and placed in the appropriate bin along with many of your posts. The potentials for weakness, in my opinion are: Lack of a full featured mission editor. Debatable definition of the "Dynamic Campaign." Huge question of the online capabilities that many of us are placing an awfull lot of trust in. Future "Official Factory compiled" add-ons that would keep the sim intact yet expandable. Some of the above have yet to have run their full course, so the word "potential" is all important at this yet un-released time. DanW, Not sure. Many are speculating October. Myself, I plan to be real complimentary to any Santa Clause's I see between now and Christmas. IP: Logged |

I don't see how any WWII sim enthusiast can do anything but look forward to this game with eager anticipation. I doubt it will not have Janes WWII Fighters type graphics, but I believe that the damage modelling will make up for any lack in sparkle of the planes. I agree with you Pops on the points you make about so many guys pinning their hopes on the multiplayer aspect. I wonder, and even doubt that it will have the capability of having very many people (16 or more)online at the same time, without experiencing incredible lag, etc. We will just have to cross our fingers and hope. Add ons will happen if it's a HUGE success. If not, forget it! This brings into question the decision of not allowing the user community the ability to build aircraft, or even make skins, as they have been shown to be fully capapble of doing, with excellent results I might add. This could always change, and I'm crossing my fingers again, that it does and with less acromony and time than what happened with Janes WWII Fighters. Which just now is gaining this ability. I really think that the key to this game will be the NEW aspect of crew management. Not one sims out there has this, and this could bridge people from one genre into this one. I think this will be what everyone ends up talking about in January when we will have been playing it for a few weeks. I also predict it will be ripped by many for it's representation of flight models. Now, thats no big prediction really. Whenever it finally comes out (Dec 5th), I will snatch a copy up, and I'll be posting my views along with all of you after I spend about 4 hours just shooting the other B17's in formation! Hey, I'll need a non-evasive target at first! PR=FC= IP: Logged |

Spanky here... I've never really cared about a dynamic campaign, BUT without a good mission editor it makes it even less appealing. Yes the whole online issue is kinda troubling. Specialy when you have guys practicing and forming squads. How many sims have actually come out with Factory made add ons in the last couple years? So if theres not mission editor and theres no online or bad online we have a great single player flight sim that can be played a couple times and then people will move on. Hmm...... Looks like we will have to wait a little longer for the holy grail. IP: Logged |

Spanky the Mad Dog Pilot |
Spanky here.. Actually pops not much. I'm VERY hard on any games or sims. WHY? Cause companies are so good at screwing them up. I swear they never even play them before they release half of them. Is it wrong of me to point out that I don't think the game is going to be all that the hype is building it up to be? We need a little balence It might be alot of peoples thing probly just not mine. Most of all it just doesn't seem like it will have alot of staying power. If online doesn't take off, and no one cracks it so you can play with it, and theres no dynamic campaign Nor a good mission creator, how long can people play with it before they get bored? I'm sure it will still be worth the money that its sold for though, Even a game that holds my interest for 2 weeks is worth $50 really. Its just not the value that some other games or sims are. Maybe it's just me, but something about that B-17 doesn't look right. I don't know what it is, but something off...... But those cockpits are amazing!!! just beautiful! Thanks for posting the screen shots Pops! ------------------ IP: Logged |

We are told that the screenshots are taken with a wide angle lens. There is distortion in many of the shots. I would like to see some with a more "normal" lens that does not distort the view. Don't have a clue as to why the wider angle lens is used. It seems to have caught some scrutiny from many eyes. I can tell you from looking at VHS movies that things do go together much more fluid like if they are moving. IP: Logged |

Screen-shots never do justice Spanky. There is distortion on all B17-2 shots, and they're at 1024x768. I have the video and the sim is glorious to behold. The vid was made on a P3-500, un-optimised code, and it ran smooth. I suspect the later props were caused by that Athlon 900 having only a TNT2 backing it up. ![]() IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Siggi I find it hard to belive that a tnt2 with a k7 900 wouldn't be enough, I guess everyone will have to buy a geforce eh? About the screen shots. Its funny how everyone always says screenshots don't do a game justice but a SShot from SDOE looks great. IP: Logged |
|
Jv44~Siggi Pilot |
That's because you've seen SDoE running and are able to relate screen-shots to what you have seen. Take my word for it, the B17-2 screen-shots do not do justice to the running game. And I reckon you're right...a Ge-Force will be required for B17-2. But it's a worthy up-grade for such a great sim. IP: Logged |

Laika 801 Pilot |
Compared with Il-2 this is crap !!!! Uhmm - OK, some things might better than in SDOE, but most things are simply poor. Some of the user-build-SDOE-planes look much better ! Good ground tex ? NO! And look at the sky - yuk ! So - look for Il-2 screenshooots if you like good graphicsx and compare - IL-2 Strumovik will be much better ! LK IP: Logged |

darthbob Pilot |
I agree with laika il 2 looks better but. B17 does look great. the is crap mind and some of the 3d models aren't right. the 109 and 17. i think sdoe could look like that. all we would need is better lighting and support for higher res textures. IP: Logged |
|
Spanky the Mad Dog Pilot |
Spanky here.. Yeah I'm looking more foward to IL-2. Ground pounding is going to be great. IP: Logged |

Laika 801 Pilot |
darthbob - high res textures ? SDOE/OP supports up to 512x512 (or only 256x256?) sized textures, with the right mapping you can do alot (but then you need a new compi). I agree with lightning - poor in SDOE ! IP: Logged |
