Bonjour!
If you want to see a very good WW2 movie, try to find "Battle of Britain". This movie is a historical and fictive reconstitution of the beginning of the WW2.

You can see a real Sptifire, Hurricane, ME-109 (with hispano engine) and He-111. You can see also some Stuka but i'm nut sure if is real or R/C. He have a VERY good Me-109 straffing pass at the beginning od the movie.

This film was made in 1967, so the special effect isn't very good but he have some very great dogfiht sequence.

If you like WW2 aircraft you must see this film.

I have to watch "The Battle of Britain" every couple of years or so. It's a great example of how British film makers can take a great story, and put you right to sleep.

Seriously though, it's pretty dang cool. If you like WWII aircraft and you haven't seen this movie, you're doing yourself a grave injustice.

Smokey: Well of course "12 O'Clock High" is fantastic. It's B&W, it's got Gregory Peck, Jeez, what do you want? Absolutely classic.

Hey, can anybody help me remember the film that had I think Lee Marvin in it, and it was a Peckinpagh film, was it, "Cross of Iron" or "The Iron Cross"? I can't remember.

I rented it years ago when I worked nights. It seemed pretty gritty.

The only reason I watch a Brit war movie is because it is not Hollywood! But geez can they put you to sleep. BoB is one fine example of that and so is Dambusters.

The aussies come out with great war movies, eg. Gallipoli and what was the one with the cavalry charge on Berthseba in the Middle East. Now if they would just start doing WWII movies.

The way it is now you'd think American won WWII, when in reality they sat on their fat asses until 1942 (in practicality) and 1917 for the 1st big one.

I remember seeing BoB many many years ago, and did enjoy it. I will see it again real soon. There was a movie that my Marine Corps
dad took me to when I was about 5 that was really good but I can't rmemeber the fuckn name of it, fuckn, fuckn... Well anyway a good movie with a lot of good actors and special fx was TORA! X 3, I know a lot of the aircraft was plywood but it was still good.

kopper, don't give us that "sat on their fat asses" shit again! Read your fucking history.

What did the French and your fucking Commonweath do between Sept 1939 and May 1940? Nothing! Hitler invades your treaty ally Poland in Sept 39, the Brits and France immediately declare war on Germany...and then what did they do? Nothing! Fucking nothing. Why do you think they called it the "Phoney War"? Shit, with allies as disloyal as that it's a wonder we ever came to your aid!

France and Britain had far superior forces to Germany in Sept 39. If they had invaded Germany when they declared war, while Hitler was occupied in Poland, they whould have opened a two front war and Hitler would have lost his ass. His own military told him that and he told them not to worry, that the French and British were pussies and wouldn't enter the war. He was right! You waited until he could consolidate and build up his military after he was through with Poland and then it was too late. They waited until they were actually attacked, just like the US did. So if you're going to give us a ration of shit, save some for yourself.

If they hadn't sat on THEIR asses and given Hitler time, WWII could have been avoided and the US wouldn't have had to bail you out!

And WW1. Shit, we should have let the Kaiser have you. I still don't know why we got into that meat grinder. WWI Germany was sure no threat to the US. How were they going to get here in 1917...Zepplin? If we had stayed out and let the Germans finish you off we could have avoided Hitler. Fair trade if you ask me.

MK10, 'Cross of Iron' is an excellent, very gritty WW2 movie, staring the other white haired dude, James Coburn.

Also, I am sick of hearing about how 'Pvt Ryan' is a 'hollywood' portrayal of WW2. For those who don't know, the British/Commonwealth troops where 20 odd miles up the coast, they, to my knowledge, NEVER shared a foxhole with American troops. Speilbergs movie was about American units, not commonwealth ones. If you want to see it all, watch a bloated 'epic' like 'The Longest Day'. I for one prefer the small unit movies like 'Pvt Ryan', 'Cross of Iron' or 'Stalingrad'. I also heard that british Mps were bitching in parliament about 'hollywood winning the war'.why the fuck shouldn't hollywood make movies about Americans, for Americans? If you want some movies about British units than put some money into the fucking British film industry then!!!!!
Finally, if this 'we won the war, you just farted' shit is starting again, here are some FACTS ( From a N.Irish man). Britain/Commonwealth, hard and valiantly as they fought COULD NOT have won the war without Americas wealth, Industry and manpower. Even Winston fucking Churchill would agree with me on that one. Another point, America actually TOOK MORE causalties during WW2 than Britain. Hardly what I'd call 'sitting on their fat asses'. ULTIMATELY, whereas Britain, America combined took something in the region of 500,000 causalties during the war ( a horrendous amount), The Soviets took over 20 MILLION. They beat the Nazis, anybody who tells you different is just lying.......

Oh boy here we go again.

I liked BOB it was pretty cool, I also liked tora tora tora.

About who won the war. Everyone did. It woudln't have happened without everyone there.

ALL sides sat on there asses at various times. And did so throughout the war.

Just to tease my southern friends.

Besides the sheer mass of people you brought to the war being a factor, have you ever thought the reason you lost so many troops was cause they sucked ass?

what kinda soldier gets himself shot? LOL

Thats a joke BTW so fuck off.

The real reason the US lost alot of people was cause there was more of them to die.

If you want to argue about somthing argue about who was the best soldier or army or somthing.

Course we already did that and no one can every figure it out cause theres so many factors involved.

Does anyone know the percentage of fought to the percentage of WIA/KIA for each country? That I would like to see.

There's a movie with Robert Vaughn (the man from uncle) in it. About the last bridge over the Rhine. Was it called "Last Bridge over the Rhine"? It was very good i think. Really good explosions (not just those gasoline mushroom blowups) but real gritty shit-flying-through-the-air-i-can-see-the-goddamn-shockwave explosions. That's how you spot a shitty war flick or any flick for that matter. Those damn scruffy-looking gasoline pyro explosions that are supposed to depict a HE shell hitting a building. Man that sucks.

Best WWI movie? Hell, that's easy. "Hell's Angels."

Very, very controversial when it came out. Howard Hughes produced it, and the aerial combat scenes are absolutley unreal.

Also shows the horror of air combat quite well too.

Of course as an American sitting on my fat ass, I'd also have to say "Sgt. York" is a great one, just thought I'd throw something out a little more air-oriented.

Hells Angels!! Oh, yeah!! I gotta look around for that, I think it's been 30 years since I saw it! ( Feels like it, anyway! )

All Quiet On The Western Front - absolutely!! Definitely one of the better books, also....thanks for the reminder on that one.

Don't recall ever seeing anything on balloon busters, but given Hollywood's capabilities now, most any film on WWI Air Combat, if done with the devotion ( notice I didn't say talent, hehe ) of Battle of Britain....or both the devotion and talent of Pvt. Ryan...would be a must see for me....

if I can ever sneak away from Nurse Ratchett.....sshhhhhh!!!

"Memphis Belle" Had some good SFX like when the copilot went back to try his hand in the tailgunner position. I think he knicked a 109 and it went out of control and chopped a B-17 in half and the waist gunners fell out and it was cool, blood and stuff and death, thenthen, then that guy umm fell out the plane and his gutts hit the windshield of the Memphis Belle and blood and stuff ummm came out, cool...

Hear is a prime example of Hollywood bullshit! I went to see U-571 last night. I knew from the get go it was Hollywood crap. The intro narration had something to the effect: ...in 1942 german U-boats had a strangle hold on the American - British supply route. No mention of the Canada - British route which had been running since 1939!

They graciously mentioned at the end of the movie that an Enigma machine had been captured twice by Brit crews. I know that one of the boarding parties was Canadians.

Hollywood and how the US won the war yet again. Oh and yes, it was a good picture. Kept you on your seat just like Memphis Belle.

Anyone naive enough to go to a Hollywood movie expecting a documentary gets what they deserve. Look at all the dunderheads who thought Jack and Rose from Titanic were real people. Memphis Belle was so far from the truth that they didn't even use the real names of the crew!

If you are entertained you get your money's worth. If you want history watch the History Channel, it's better and cheaper than 99% of the crap Hollywood produces.
