I've been sitting here listening to people blowing about how they won the war , 'Hitler, my part in his downfall'
etc. We've had Yanks, Canadians, Aussies and Brits (and probably more), when, fact is, we all know the Irish would have walked it, given half a chance. Even though this remains as fact, I'd like to know which nation YOU think provides the world's fighting elite.

Well what I have read about the SAS impresses me. Fact is amost every country has a highly elite team. Yes even Canada. I can't remember the name though. And no one knows who's in it or any of the equipment they use or training they get. They may not even be that good but at least they are kept under wraps. heheh, for now anyway.

Seems that the US has all kinds of elite teams, Its crazy. In my mind a good elite force would be trained to use and have access to what every they needed. Air, land and sea, and technological. We are past the age where brute force gets the job done. Sometimes you might need that nerd along with ya. Albeit a highly trained killer nerd.

HAHA.

Are Gurkhas the highly trained Indians from the highlands of India? If so my dad told me about them once. Said they were the shit.

Really it wouldn't matter what country you were from If you get the right men, supplies, training, leadership and plan you should be just as good as anyone else.

I've also read stuff about the Navy Seals and although they are very good at what they do also. I find the Guys in the SAS are more hmm... Refined and such. The Navy seals seems to want to turn everyone into beer swilling killers. Nothing wrong with teaching your men to kill if thats there job. BUT..

There really seems to be nothing worse than a soldier with a religious cause-- they are more than willing to die for what they believe...and there are cases of that through history (think Kamikaze).

Fortunately having a religious cause isn't all that is needed. I don't think anyone is going to put an Arab nation at the top of the list of military elite. But I agree, if you couple religious fanaticism with a capable armed force you've got big trouble.

I was expecting, firstly, 'Ha! you Irish couldn't fight for shit!',then 'us Yanks could kick your Brit butt anyday' etc, but saying as its serious, I think the Gurkas are considered to be the very best, although history suggests that the Canadians and Australians are amongst the best too.

Spanky here...

Yeah I forgot about the religion factor.

I think it really comes down to what do you want them to do? Best at what? Over all, Hand to hand, urban warfare?

Theres alot of factors. You take all the top trained elite fighting forces and put them through the same tests and I don't think one would come out on top. Well one might but it wouldn't be a clear majority.

The Gurkhas (if they are who I think they are) are more trained in hand to hand and sneaking I think. But how well would they work in a situation where they were going to be going to be Parashuting in calling in Air strikes and being Air lifted out on heli's. Do they know how to clear and assess an LZ? Or guide the ground attack pilot in?

I'm definatly not saying anything bad about them. But we would really need to know what task or tasks they would be undertaking.

I guess another argument would be which army would win in a confrontation with the same amount of troops? But it still wouldn't be easy. Would one side have a technological advantage? Would one side be defending its homeland? Climate, religion, trust in leaders, moral.

Boy it gets pretty complicated.

When you think of it (here we go heheh) Could the allies have won the war if they only had the # of men and amount of resources the axis did?

Good last question Spanky. I have read several places that the German soldier was considered the best, man for man, in WWII. Scary to think what might have been if they wern't out-manned and out-gunned.

Spanky here..

Yeah for sure. And think of the technology they had. They had those great machine guns that the present ones are based on. I think they had a ancestor of the AK-47. They had the tiger tanks. Some great aircraft. The subs. Anyway they were pretty damn good at the tech side of war. Its insane how much of the stuff we used after the war and still use that is based on the technology they developed.

Yeah I think we would have lost if it wasn't for shear #s and resources.

Your right Spanky, so much of the German military hardware influenced what you see today, think V1 + V2. Their MG42 is still considered one of the most well designed machine guns of all time, the M60 a direct, and less successful descendant of it. The MP43/44 that you mentioned was the first true assault rifle and it certainly influenced Kalasnikovs(sp?) design.I don't think many people are under the illussion that the allies beat the Germans simply through skill and ability. The massively greater force played a BIG part in it.

For me, going back to WW2, it would have to be the Z Special Unit (more commonly known as Z Force). It was the fighting arm of the Australian Services Reconnaisance Department and fought in the SW Pacific.

The unit was very, very cladestine. Its existance was not made public knowledge until after the war. Most of its records were kept secret under the 50 year rule and were only declassified a few years ago.

They were the guys who sailed the 'Krait' over to occupied Singapore (just a few thousand miles behind enemy lines)and sunk a shite load of Jap ships in Singapore Harbour using limpet mines.

I guess the other reason is that my old man was in the unit .... but he's always been my hero anyway.....just like all our dads.....

Cheers,

AGAS 5

My old man : Signalman
Patrol: AGAS 5
Project: Kingfisher
Unit: Z Force
Location: Occupied Borneo

Wow, Agas-5, you should be proud! I remember seeing a TV drama about that mission with Jason Donavan in it. It was an unbelievable achievement!

Z force, I used to watch a tv series by that name years ago. Think it was made in the late 60's or early 70's and starred Jack Thompson and some other guy.
Not a bad series for it's time. I loved it.
Don't know if their missions were factual based or made up but it sure beat watching Bonanza!

Ok it wasn't Z force I was thinking of but Spyforce. Had a young Russell Crowe in it too I just discovered.
Don't know if it's anything to do with the real Z force or not or maybe they had to make it look ficticious at the time.
