I picked up 2 sticks of 128 ram 'cuz its so cheap right now. The problem is this. Once I'm all booted up and I check how much memory I have it should say 512...it shows 511. What gives?

I'm using PC100/66 SDRAM if that helps any. I'm sure that the memory I had in before was the same.

I also get memory too low errors. I've tried switching around the sticks in different slots as well...same errors. Once I remove just 1 stick for a total of 384, everything is cool...no errors and its quick

My Mo/Bo says I can use up to 1 GB of register/unbuffered ECC SDRAM. The MoBo is an IWILL model DBD100.

Please help me out here...my wife will definately kill me if I drag her back to the return line!

What OS are you using? Win98 rarely likes anything above 512, and even a few "modern" boards dont like to have all their RAM slots filled up... I would suggest you go pick up 3 sticks of 128 PC100 Crucial SDRAM. Sounds to me like youve got conflicting RAM problems...

Argon,
I'm running Win98. I have 3 NEW sticks of 128 and 2 older of 128. In my troubleshooting I tried each stick by itself in various slots to see if I had a bad piece. EVERY stick checks out fine. Mind you that's 5 sticks total. The only time I get a problem is when I fill up the 4 slots. When I use 3 or less slots all is good.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot conflicting RAM problems?

Some questions:

-Your new sticks are 100mhz or 133mhz; and the older are 66mhz?

-Your bus frequency (that configuration who tells the CPU frequency - ex:. 10x66mhz equal 660Mhz) are based on 66 or 100?

regards,
K-A

Diego,
i´m no hardware expert but:
did you had a look at the mobo website if it is a motherboard problem?

I know that sometimes RAMs from different companies are incompatible together.

Did you also check your BIOS. Maybe there is something to do for you.

All 5 sticks are 100Mhz. The MoBo supports both 100 and 66 Mhz bus speeds. I'm at 100.

I've gon to the MoBo website and there is no support at the support page...just a few old files

Either way, I'm cool at 384ram. It would just be nice to get all 4 slots working.

Diego - Are you running anything extra at start up? I had this problem recently when I finished my new system ; at first, Windows showed 512 as it should. Then I did something - and dang it I forget what it was - to 'tweak' Windows, and next boot showed 511.

Wait....it had something to do with the config.sys file. Try REM'ing out every line, or go to System Information, System Startup, and disable config.sys and autoexec.bat for one boot, and see if the 512 is reported correctly. I think it has something to do with EMM386, and DOS gets about 1 meg of RAM which Windows then doesn't see.

Hope that helps.

Who would have thought that something so simple could get so confusing so damn quick!

I just recieved an email from the MoBo support. They say that there is a problem with the ECC checking. They say that I need to upgrade my BIOS to the latest.

No problemo I say. I am a self aware American male who dont know shit about this stuff...I can surely figure it out. Wrong!! I d/l the file and print out the most confusing garbled mess I've ever read.

There must be about 10 lines of warnings and lawyer speak that relieves all responsibility.

My last questions on this subject are: Is there a clear set of instructions that a 4th grader could understand? Can someone guide me through this mess if I send you the readme?

I need a damn drink...Tequila straight up!
