If I recall correctly, this may be a patch issue? It's just that I can drop these things from 15,000 ft plus and no matter how I high tail it out of the area, the shockwave still blows me to bits! This can't be right can it? I've seen film of the Tirpitz under Tallboy attack and the columns of water are big but not overly so. In the game with 1.5.2.10 installed, the column of water reaches well above 15,000 ft with the Grand Slam and I think even the Tallboy! Any information or fixes would be welcome.

If you are playing with Patch 10 and with Alternate Explosions checked off under swttings, you should not be blowing up that high. The game models warheads pretty powerfully without the beta patch, or when alt explosions are unchecked.
