Is there a way to turn off the speeches in the game menu. Although they were nice to hear for the first few times, they are starting to get rather tiresome to listen too.

ahhhh...he's telling me about Midway AGAIN!!!! noooooooo ...

I don't know if this is hard coded into the sim, but if not, then it should be possible to change it. If you have the parsoft tools, try using BigMunger to 'unbig' the parfiles and look for the speech files. If you can find them, extract them, and try replacing them with something else.

Never tried it .... but I would love to change it. I mostly fly WW1 .... and the speeches are totally inappropriate!

Some aspects of the game are hard-coded... so you might not be able to do this. Some of the screen backgrounds you can change ... some you can't.

Try it and see!

If you are stuck on HOW to do this, drop me an e-mail, and I will try and talk you through it

This can be done quite easily. I'm at work so I don't have the exact details, but in short, what I did was to un-par the PAR files into a temporary directory to get the directory and file names of the background sound files, and then I took some airfield background sounds (WAVs I think) off of some multimedia CDs and named them to the file names in the game. Then I simply placed them in the approriate directories under Fighter Squadron and voila, my background sounds are now inocuous engines starting, planes flying by, birds chirping, dogs barking, etc. I'll try to post the specifics when I get home tonight.

Yup....I don't remember either, but I was able to add Axis Sally, Tokyo Rose, Lord Ha Ha, and some Frech radio voives to vary the repertoire....if you do a search here under downloads I think, there is a file from Pachy or someone else with French voices-- that thread may tell you where everything is located.

OK, here's the deal. The directories in question are:

Fighter Squadron\Media\GUI\Sounds\Radio

and

Fighter Squadron\Media\GUI\Sounds\Tuner

The way I have it figured, you have to have ten files in the first named RADIO#01.wav through RADIO#10.wav, and six files in the second named RadioTuning01.wav through RadioTuning06.wav. This way, the game won't mix and match default ones with new ones.

I only managed to find eight WAV files on the Maris Multimedia/Discovery Channel Wings series of CD-ROMs which had the sound fade in at the beginning of the file and then out at the end sufficiently enough to make their transitions in the game go smoothly and unnoticed at the relatively low volume they play at. Therefore, I just duplicated the files to get up to the 16 files necessary to do a complete replacement. The atmosphere evoked is quite nice and I even leave the game open sometimes for ambience while I'm doing other things!

Presumably, any WAV files will work, but getting them to blend nicely can be a challenge. Anyone is welcome to mine, but they are quite large adding up to about 2.5MB when zipped. If you want them, email me at 3dp@msn.com.

I checked that location and all I have is an Art folder, a Fonts folder and gui.ppf and score.ppf. So if I make the Sounds folder then inside that the Radio and Tuner folders and put sound files in those , that should replace the default sounds?

Yep

IF you duplicate the structure shown, it will over-ride whatever is in the parfile

GREAT!!!!!!!!!

Now to start finding some WW1 stuff...fed up with loking at WW1 planes while a voice tells me all about a battle 30 years in the future...
