Hi, This is a rather lengthy problem but I would appreciate it if you all would read it and try and help me out. Thanks Over the last few days I have lost both of my SDOE installs completly. Now the game will not even work correctly when I do I full reinstall . Let me tell you the chain of events leading to this problem. First off I'm running WinMe. Earlier this week I installed IL2 with DirectX 8. SDOE was still working perfectly for two days after I installed IL2 and DirectX. Then 2 days ago, I installed a slot of 256 RAM by PNY. This brings my total RAM to 512. Everything was still working fine SDOE, IL2 and my other games. That night I ran ScanDisk. When I woke up I restarted my PC to find out that SDOE was not working. The game would load fine. Then the second the mission starts the game would freeze, this happened in both of my SDOE installs. So I deleted both of my SDOE installs completely, the folders and all so there was nothing left. I even used McAfee Quick clean that Sparks reccomended to me, as to get rid of every piece of the SDOE files. Then I reinstalled the stock SDOE game from the original disk. I went to go fly a mission, it loaded, then as soon as the game started it froze, causing me to reboot. This happened many times, sometimes, I even got this for an error message after SDOE froze: VMM (01) + 000132CA Error:0D :0028 :00142CA I uninstalled and reinstalled SDOE several times with the same result. Not only has this problem affected SDOE but I have lost Halflife and Links 2001. But IL2 and CeaserIII still work fine, so do my other programs??? I'm thinking ScanDisk maybe fixed something it wasn't supposed to, none of these problems happened untill I ran ScanDisk. I have also reinstalled my GeForce Drivers because I thought that might be the prob. So could it be my new RAM causing the problem maybe, I hear WinMe doesn't handle large amounts of RAM well. Or do I need to reinstall WinMe possibly? I hope this isn't a format the whole hard drive kind of Problem. Thanks for reading this lengthy problem. I would greatly appreciate any info or help. I'm very upset that I can no longer play my favorite Sim ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

Blacksheep ; when you run Scandisk, do you have it set to fix errors automatically? Sometimes, if so, that can cause problems. Could you defrag after running scandisk? I had this happen once long ago with Win95; scandisk found a problem and I let it fix it. It created a bunch of lost cluster files that required me to eventually format and reinstall Windows. There may be a log of any errors it found, probably on your Root drive...give it a look see and maybe you can locate the problem.Perhaps just a reinstall of Me over the top of your existing may also get the problem fixed. It may be a corrupt file somewhere in the library. If you have Windows Media Player, try it and see if it works...might also help narrow it down. I am sure someone can give you a idea of what that VMM error means. I have a vague idea, but not enough to suggest anything else.

Blacksheep, I just recently had a e-mail virus problem that caused start-up problems for me when attempting to run anything. It's probably not related to your problem at all, but I'll send you an e-mail message with the info anyway. IP: Logged |

Nealg, I did run scandisk with the autofix selected. Perhaps I shouldn't do that in the future, I think it deleted something important like you said. And yes, I was able to run defrag with no problem afterwards. My scandisk log doesn't keep a list of all previous scans, so it is not showing that it fixed any errors because I ran scandisk yesterday and it said everything was fine. However, right after scandisk was run the first time, I remember it said it fixed some errors in the FSI or FS file. Now I'm not sure exactly but I think it was something like that. I think a reinstall of Me might have to be done like you said. Thanks for the info Nealg. FLyXwire, thanks for sending me the e mail about the virus. I looked for the kernel32.exe and it was not in the Windows folder, I also ran virus scan and everything checked out okay. So at least I know it is not a virus now. Thanks again to both of you. ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

Guys, I solved the problem. I guess after all it was the RAM that was causing the problem. I'm not so sure that it was bad RAM, but I think that WinMe maybe didn't know what to do with that much RAM. I have heard Me can't handle to much memory. It was strange because other programs worked fine I just lost Half Life, Links and SDOE, so I didn't think the RAM was causing it. Well I might bring the Ram back and get another slot of 256 and see if it was bad RAM or WinMe causing the trouble. Thanks to all of you for trying to help me out, I much appreciate it. ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

Oh alright, perhaps it was bad RAM then, I have PC133 RAM just like you so it should have worked. Just curious Jerry, what are the sizes of your individual RAM cards. I have two PC133 128mb and had added a PC133 256 mb. Would the RAM being different sizes cause conflict maybe? Just curious about this, I plan on bringing back this RAM anyway so before I get a new stick of it I would like to know if variation in size makes any difference. Thanks alot Jerry. I have two 256 sticks. I don't think the size mix should make any difference, I'm not a guru though. I would put my 256 stick in the first slot though.Have you tried just the new ram after removing your older sticks? If it's a problem with the new stick this would isolate it. IP: Logged |

I havn't tried the 256 stick of RAM by itself, but I have a feeling it's bad now. I switched it around so that the 256 was in the first slot with the two 128's behind it. When I went to go fly SDOE it froze before the terrain even loaded. I took it back out and SDOE was fine again. I still might try your test with the 1 stick of 256 installed by itself. P.S. If anybody knows if having different RAM sizes mixed together efects performance please post here. Thanks IP: Logged |

Blacksheep ; Well, hehe, like with any PC question, it depends. But overall, no, it shouldn't. As was said, sometimes it makes a difference where you put it in relation to the others, but in most cases, you can even mix PC100 and PC133 as long as you don't run your FSB beyond ( or too FAR beyond ) 100.'In most cases'...LOL. It is dependent too upon your motherboard, or PC, manufacturer. The manual for either, if well done, should tell you exactly how it should be configured if special steps are needed...otherwise, sky's the limit. AFAIK, WinMe shouldn't have any more trouble with it than Win98. Your test sounds like it indeed may be a defective stick, but you should try it as suggested by itself to see if it works ok, before taking it back. It could be a motherboard issue. My old Abit BX6-2 had 4 DIMM slots, and could hold 1 gig RAM max, but turned out it had trouble with recognizing the 4th slot, so I could only use the first 3. That is just info, and doesn't necessarily relate to your problem. Luck!!

Doesn't it matter what type of RAM you install i.e. SDRAM, DRAM etc?P IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info Nealg, unfortunatly my gateway computer manual only has info for new computer users. It does not tell what the motherboard supports or even what kind of motherboard is in there. But my PC is only 1 year old, so I imagine that the MoBo can support at least 512 RAM. And Psi, I have all sticks of SDRAM, but I do not think that you can intermix DRAM and SDRAM. That's what I've heard anyway. Thanks for info guys IP: Logged | |
