Topic: Damn CD-ROM Bug!

Never downloaded it since my old system never needed it, but now my new PC has the dreaded "Can't read the CD-ROM" problem. I don't want to install patch 1.5 as I've always been told that one must run the game once before installing it*, but I can't run it because I can't get the CD Bug patch from fightersquadron.com. Can someone tell me where to get it or email it to me PLEASE!*Once and for all, is this true? The Wings With Wires Critical SDOE files site makes no mention of this step. What's the deal, and to anyone who answers this question, what are your sources? WWW seems pretty autoritative. HELP! ------------------

Ya gotta have the "official" 1.5 patch installed to play without the CD. How did you play without it?IP: Logged |

Install the 1.5.9 latest patch. No need to run anything, or do anything else. The 1.5.9 contains all the code fixes in 1.5 as I understand it. Last time I did a fresh install, I just slapped in the 1.5.9 and ran app.exe and it worked just fine------------------

I didn't play without the CD without installing the 1.5 patch. I just ran the game once using the CD as so many sources here have said I should before installing 1.5. Then the CD's job was over. My old system did not encounter the CD read bug, but my new one has, so I'm stuck.Can anyone back up WTG's statement above that, effectively, the official 1.5 patch is now obsolete? ------------------

It is and it isn't ... if you know what I mean. If you want to play with the WWW patches, then yes. But not everyone does. They do still have a few bugs in them, but they also have a lot of features in them. Most people online use them IP: Logged |

I personaly think of patch 1.5 as my base installation, I'll always have it installed, I see no reason to have it any other way since the latest patch uses it's own exe file, on the other hand, patch 1.5 adds and updates alot of the systyem files for SDOE, so I don't know how things would be if I didn't install it and just used the new patch, anyway, I'll always install 1.5 regardless I think, so, it might be obsolete other than I dunno if you need those system files updating for the patchIP: Logged |

Download the 1.5 original patch, unzipped in your fighter squadron directory , rename the file Atoc.rtp in Patch.rtp and click on patchdos.exe . Ready .IP: Logged |

Just for the record . . .Using a combination of the suggestions above, I managed a workaround: 1. I installed the game normally. 2. I installed the 1.5.2.9 patch so I could run the game once without the CD-ROM. 3. I ran the game once and flew a mission. The GUI was a bit screwed up in places (the Options buttons were blank among other things) which told me I still needed the 1.5 patch. 4. I installed the 1.5 patch. 5. I recopied the sdemons.ini, etc. to the 1.5.2.9 directory. 6. I ran the game and everything, including the GUI, seems fine. ------------------
