Hey, I'm finally moving up in the PC world. Nothing spectacular, but much better than what I had for gaming.

Question: Can I mix PC100 and PC133 memory in my DIMM slots and not degrade performance? Is it just a matter of putting the PC133 chip in the first slot to get the best performance, or will the very presence of the PC100 memory slow things down?

I know from experience on my old PC that putting older EDO memory in the SIMM slots while having PC100 memory in the DIMM slots slowed things down despite actually increasing the memory total. However, this situation seems different since I'm not mixing SIMMs and DIMMs.

As I understand it, if you put PC133 and PC100 together, you get PC100.

The memory will effectively operate at the speed of the slowest. I bought PC133 last time I bought RAM, firstly because it was on special offer and was cheaper, and secondly because my MOBO will support it. So, I can gradually replace the 100 with 133 as and when.

Depending on your machine, your MB may not recognize the 133 RAM. Take out the 100 and start the machine. It'll either work or it won't. If it starts then you can use the 133. If it doesn't you're stuck with 100.
You can't mix the two speeds. If you do the machine will only see the 100. You also need to know what the maximum RAM your MB will support. Generally, if you have 100 your max. is 256. This is on a machine that's about 2 years old. Even the 100 Mhz RAM is cheap these days.
