I got a IBM 300GL recently and have started upgrading it. First I got a new HD and a burner, and yesterday I bought a new 1GHz CPU. IBM said it wouldn't work - suckers...Anyway the only CPU fan that fit sounded like a jet taking off. Now the machine I have is IBM's "4x4", and what they do is put the power supply on a rack in the middle of the case so the fan is right over the CPU. That way you don't need a separate CPU fan. So I pulled the new fan off. The question is how do I know if this is bad or not? The heat sink still feels cool to the touch, but I'm not sure that means anything. I downloaded Motherboard Monitor, but it says everything is 0 degrees. Suggestions? Maury IP: Logged |

I know more information now. The MB uses a VIA chip set that supports temperature measures. Does this mean anything? If I have this chip set and a Intel CPU am I all done?MBM5 said I had no sensor, which I think is odd. If the CPU has it built in (and I think they all do now) do I need something else too? Hi Maury, ok, I personaly suggest having a fan on the CPU heatsink aswell, but lets pass some other info:If you got a CD with the m/b there should be a utility from Via called Via Hardware Monitor (ViaHM) this will tell you the temp of the CPU, there's a sensor under the centre of the CPU on the m/b. As an unofficial guide, you don't want the CPU hotter than 50 degees C, my Duron 1ghz runs at about 41 degrees with full CPU loading, the ViaHM will tel you what temp your running, but I also believe that it tells you the temp on bootup aswell. As another note... modern good fans do sound like that, Delta fans of 6000rpm and higher are much louder, but by far better for you to have, you simply have to accept that as you get beter CPU's your PC will be louder Mine sounds like a vacuum cleanter with a silencer fitted LOL, 4 8cm fans, 500rpm fan on the CPU, and fans on the harddrives aswell LOL I have ViaHM if you need it, let me know, but without being certain of the temp I wouldn't dare run the CPU witout a fan of it's own fitted. (Don't forget that although it may feel cool to touch, once the case is closed you get a massive build up of heat inside) Hope this helps Maury, let me know if you want me to mail you ViaHM ~Nat~ IP: Logged |

Thanks for the note Nat! quote: Originally posted by Nat: If you got a CD with the m/b there should be a utility from Via called Via Hardware Monitor (ViaHM) this will tell you the temp of the CPU, there's a sensor under the centre of the CPU on the m/b.
Not on mine, it used a Slot 1 and I have to use an adaptor. But doesn't the Intel itself have some sort of monitor inside it? quote: Mine sounds like a vacuum cleanter with a silencer fitted LOL
I'm just not willing o put up with this though, I have the world's quietest HD and CD's, a loud fan simply isn't right. Would you mind mailing me the ViaHW installer? Maury IP: Logged |

n/p Maury, but your using a slot cpu with an adaptor to the socket? If thats the case the program wont give you a true reading, it measures the temp from just below the centre of the CPU, but in your case there isn't one there. I must admit though, I have no idea if intel have one built in. I'll dig out the prog and either send it to you in the mail, or if it's too big I'll setup my FTP for you to get it from.IP: Logged | |
