Hello, Today I got my 64mb GeForce2 GTS by visiontek. I have not installed it yet. I was wondering if first I should, uninstall the drivers to my current TNT2 before removing the old card and putting in the new one. And if there are any other bits of advice about installiation, I would much appreciate it as I'm new to installing graphics cards. Thanks

Just to be safe, I would definitely uninstall the TNT2 drivers; if you were using Nvidia reference drivers, you should be able to do this from Windows' Add/Remove programs. And if you plan to install the Nvidia drivers for the new card, have the ones you want downloaded and unpacked into a folder of your choice, so you can point Windows to the proper .inf file location when you install. If you are using the card makers' drivers, they should have instructions at their web site for uninstalling their drivers.

Make sure when you uninstall the previous drivers that you catch their .inf file - in Win98 it is located normally in Windows\system\Inf\Other if I recall right. It should be named something that can easily identify it; mine for Nvidia are usually called nvaml.inf or some such. You will likely have to delete this file by hand...not all uninstalls catch it.

Good luck.

Yes...
Uninstall the drivers and declare the TNT as generic vga card before removing it.
I also changed a TNT2 for a GF2pro last week, and forgot to do it, i ended up reinstalling Windows...

For sure!! Thanks, Luny! LUNY!! How are ya?? Haven't seen ya for a while...hope things are doing well!

Yes...first go into your Display Properties, Settings, Advanced, and locate your adapter. It should say TNT2 or similar. Click on that tab.

Click on the button that says 'Change' - have Windows show all in a specific location - in the left pane, find the heading that shows, in the right window, selections involving 'Standard VGA' - select the Standard PCI VGA Graphics Adapter - let Windows reboot - and don't get sick, cause it will be ugly.

Now you can proceed to uninstall the old drivers, and remove the old card from Device Manager...be sure to do that just before you shut down to install the new card. With some cards, this step also uninstalls the drivers, and with some cards, uninstalling the drivers will remove the Device Manager entry.

Best bet is checking one of the 3d tech sites for precise instructions...mine are prone to inadequate RAM ( my old man memory, hehe ).

Thank you very much for your detailed instructions, I did not know I had to do all of that stuff as well, you probably just saved me a major Windows crash. I should be installing the card soon, will let you know if anything else comes up. Thank you very much again, I really apprecitiate it .
