Hi guys, ok here's what I've done. I've changed my Voodoo3 for a new GF2MX400 64mb AGP. The instalation goes fine using the driver CD provided, but this CD only has MX dirvers and not MX400, and also they are quiet old. So, I download the latest detonator driver (12.41), and insal them, on rebooting I now have 2 GF3MX400 graphics cards listed in the display properties, but not in the control panel, it also instals a new "unkown" monitor, and I haven't had a game work yet, graphics are a complete mess and the games lockup.
OK, so can someone explain to me why this is happening, I'm very PC savy but this one is realy giving me some grief.

Sys spec:
AMD Duron @ 1ghz
640 mb PC133 ram
ViaKt133A Ultra chipset
Geforce 2 MX 400 64mb AGPx4

Thanks guys, hopefully one of you has had this problem and found a fix.

Did you uninstall the old driver and install the new one in Safe Mode?

Also, 12.41 is optimized for DX8. Are you running DX8? For games like SDOE that don't use DX8 features I found that older nVidia drivers run faster than 12.41. My Mark2000 bench mark score dropped by 1,000 points when I installed 12.41. Mark2000 doesn't measure DX8 performance. I run 6.5 and am very happy with it.

sorry, I should have said.

I'm running Win98 with all current updates + Directx8.

I've tried installing the latest drivers by running the instal pog, and also bu extracting them and using the Update Driver option and pointing the the new drivers in the extracted file, but each time I end up with 2 g/cards installed although there is only 1 showing up in the devoce manager.. very strange.. I'm goig to look for specific drivers for the MX-400 series and see what I come up with, but right now no programs will run that use any form of 3D

Nat,

Go into safemode, delete ALL graphic card references AND monitors. Reboot. Make sure your BIOS is setup to use AGP. Reboot. When entering Win98, install the drivers on the disk. Reboot. Fix up your display the way you want it. The GeForce2 MX cards DO set up two monitors so do not worry about that. Go online and download the 12.41 Detonator drivers. Install them and reboot. (You may not want to run the EXE file at first, but instead just update the drivers in System under Control Panel)

When this is done, reboot. All SHOULD be well! Now you can go get the GeForce Tweak Utility. This furthermore increases your video performance.

OK, they could have said that Geforce setup 2 displays even though there's only 1 attached! DOH! That means that my setup was actualy fine. In the past I've set my maching up to use 2 monitors, but this only ever works if you have 2 g/cards installed (1 PCI and 1 AGP)

So.. big thankyou Argon I've just spen the last 2 hours re-installing windows and other progs to see if a complete re-instal would fix the problem that wasn't a problem.. if only they would tell us dumb things like this before we freak out trying to fix it lol.. oh well.

Cheers!

OK, this is slowly becomming unfunny...

The card is installed, and set to AGP in the bios, this is a clean instal of windows+DX8+Detonator 12.41 drivers.. 3D games just wont work, I slowly have a mind to get my money back and put the old Voodoo back. I'll tinker around some more, but hell, it can't be this hard to get it running surely?

Again, any help, suggestions, settings are very much needed and very appreciated.

I just installed SFB Empires at War, video preview works, but the game wont start after that.... I'm baffled.

OK, this piece of crap is going back tomorrow..

After re-instaling the drivers that came with it, it seems to be running fine in OpenGl, SDOE looks amazing, but as soon as I change to D3D I get maybe 3 mins play before it just locks up. The latest Detonator drivers only seem to make things worse, even a different set of MX drivers didn't help. Theres no way I want a g/card where I can use the latest drivers.

I realy don't know why this is so screwy, maybe because it's not a "True Nvidia" in reads an Nvidia in the bios boot screen, as the 2mx400 with 64mb, but it's Nvidia chips on a different board, maybe if this wasn't the case I'd have more luck, so I'll see about that tomorrow, or get the ASUS version of the Mx400, but eiter way, this card is history.

Thanks for trying though guys.

Nat, I dont know why yours is giving you so much trouble! I plugged my visiontek one right in after getting rid of all previous drivers and it worked like a charm!

D3d no longer works for you now? Did you try messing with the different advanced settings? Or the AGP apature (spelling?) size?

You can configure what the second "default" monitor is, but it is just there because on Twinview which allows you to setup 2 different monitors on one G-card.

It sounds like some of your core files are missing... I know I accidently deleted my OpenGL core windows files a while back and none of my OpenGL games would work. Also make sure you set your D3d to the right one. I know 2 D3d options are available with my card. One of them is the default and the other one is the NVIDIA Geforce2 MX D3d option.

Also, I didn't catch what brand card that was. Hoping it isn't Creative's version; that would mean a whole new game. One thing that might help, if you haven't already returned it. http://www.geforcefaq.com/ has a lot of info on all geforce cards, but particularly the Creative ones. Other than that, I haven't heard of this particular problem.

There is one brand - Leadtek, or Visiontek, I get all those tek's confused, LOL - that has had some driver problems. Not all of them, but some. And they use their own tweak proggie, and don't work well with 3rd party ones. Can't recall which for sure - a lot of the info is from the forum at www.guru3d.com .

I too have the gforce2 MX\400, and i had a doozy of a time finally getting the card to run correctly! But never had lock-ups or crashing to desktop etc. Your right tho Nat, they should tell us these things before we go nuts trying to figure it out.

Thanks again guys, after alot of pain and suffering I've gt it half way working, halfway in that some games play fine, while others (Unreal) still wont have it. I had massively tweaked my BIOS up to the max, after reducing te BIOS set clock speed from 112mhz down to 100 again . So, basicaly I have to set my BIOS to "bog standard", then try tweaking it up as best I can till the g/card wont go anymore.. oh the joys of life

Nat,

The problem may be your motherboard.
Go here: http://www.guru3d.com/guide/via-vs-videocard/

Here's another article of interest http://www.guru3d.com/tech/voodoo-to-nvidia/index1.shtml

Also,
Have you turned off shadow ram, video cache and bios cache in your bios? These will cause frequent lockups.

Next- Who made the board? There are certain manufacturers you should stay away from. if it's one of those, you may want to return the board and get one from a different mfg.

Thaks for all the help guys, but I just aint happy with this card, probably the fault of the maker (Genius) it's a full 2MX400 put on someone elses card, not unusual ofcourse, but even so, I can still only get 2 games to work with it, the max resolution is only 1600x1200 when it should be around 2048x1600 or something like that. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I'm changing it for a GF2GTS tomorrow, still the Nvidia chipset on a little known brand card, but I gotta think of the price and it will be faster aswell, so, hopefully tomorow my Nvidia woes will be over... or possibly just starting again LOL

To be continued.....

OK, Tomorrow is the day that finaly (hopefully!) this saga comes to an end, after changing the MX400 for a GTS, then getting home to find out it was actualy a 256 which is no faster than my Voodoo3 to start with! (boy was I pissed) I ordered a Hercules Prophet2 GTS 32mb DDR TV out. It comes in the morning and at last I can get back to a stable system, and this being a good and well known brand I "shouldn't" have any more problems and atlast have a g/card that I can do everything with for atleast another 6 months lol

fingers crossed of course LOL
