I have a Gforce2GTS video card.I decided to try some different video settings and here is what I found for my computer. All were tried with 800 X 600. When I run in OpenGL with antialiasing off I get over 60 fps, when I turn antialiasing on my fps drop below 20 fps. However, to my supprise the anoying cloud flicker goes away. This is cool, except, below 20 fps as we know is not acceptable for online. When I run in Direct3D with antialiasing on I get over 60 fps, however the cloud flicker is there. I do not see any difference in quality between OpenGl and D3D. Questions: Why does everyone say that OpenGL gives better graphics? For me there is no difference. Does anyone know how to get rid of the cloud flicker in D3D? Am I missing some particular setting? BTW, I tried the newest drivers and that did not cure. ------------------ Archer ^I^ IP: Logged |

Personaly, I don't think there's anything better than D3D unless you're flying Open GL at 1600@1200 or higher. I only use D3D at either 1600x1200 or 1792x1344 on my Voodoo3, if I compair that to even 1024x768 it makes me wonder why pople use low res. I average about 30fps in a standard mission using high resolutions, so thats good enough for me Online I would probably use a lower res though.Maybe see what the difference is when you use high resolutions rather than low. Cloud flicker.. I don't have any flicker in D3D, but then I'm using a voodoo, so I can't tell you what to change on your GTS IP: Logged |

I think a lot of it is down the the individual graphics cards. And the drivers too. My GeForce 2MX runs better in OpenGL than in D3D. The graphics are clearer, the textures truer, and everything is flicker free....and faster than D3D. Basically, from what I have read, my card is optimised for OpenGL. It is aimed at the Quake type of game, ond most of those seem to OpenGL. My old Voodoo2 ran Glide well, bt was rubbish on D3D..... Anyway, the only advice to aynone is simple....use the rendering system that works best for you! Run D3D or OpenGL and turn the clouds off!!!! IP: Logged |

Thanks for the feed back guys.Nat, I have tried higher settings and see absoulety no difference in the picture. The only thing that happens is that the chat text, target ID info, map & hud numbers gets to small for my old eyes to read! LOL TG...... but I love the clouds! ------------------ Archer ^I^ IP: Logged |

Archer, I also have a GeForce2GTS. When in D3D I get terrible jaggies along the coast lines and runway edges are wavy, don't you?. I don't get cloud flicker with either but the clouds do look better and are more abundant with D3D. IP: Logged |

Jerry,I don't notice any of the problems you describe. Tonight I will post my exact settings & driver details and maybe we can do some comparison to see why our cards are producing different results. Thanks! ------------------ Archer ^I^ IP: Logged |

Jerry,I am running on a P4 1.7 with Win98 2nd Edition. 64MB GeForce drivers: 4.12.01.0650 The display adaptor says my BIOS is 3.15.00.05.10 I can get you any other info if necessary, not sure what all relates to the Vid Card? Here are the GeForce2 GTS Direct3D Settings: (checked) Enable fog table emulation (checked) Adjust Z-buffer depth to rendering depth if unequal (no check) Enable alternate depth buffering technique (no check) Display Logo when running Direct3D applications Mipmapping detail level "Best Image Quality" PCI Texture memory size - Use up to 15 MB Textel Alignment = 3 Antialiasing control - 2x2 low detail (checked) Force antialiasing in all applications. Please let me know how yours differs from mine. Thanks. ------------------ Archer ^I^ IP: Logged |

Archer, same as you with the following exceptions:1.2GH Athlon OC to 1.33 and Windows Me 32mb GTS with 2.15.01.13 BIOS Antialiasing is Off. This is a real frame rate killer. The PCI Texure memory is irrelevant if you have an AGP card. Are you sure you don't have coastline jaggies? Everyone sees them in D3D. Fly along Dover and look at the white cliffs. One other note, with the patch I can not fly D3D above 800X600. I either CTD or have no joystick control. IP: Logged |

Jerry,I took a quick flight down the coast at Dover and made a couple of screen shots for you to compare. I did not reduce the picture size so that you could see complete detail, so the page make take a little longer to load. I think I see what you are talking about, I see in the distance at the cliffs on the second picture. I did not see anything along the runway though. Even though I have antialiasing turned on, in D3D I still get over 60fps, even with many players online. Lucky I guess! Yes, you see it most along the cliffs. You don't see it at all in OpenGL. If you keep looking for it you will see it elsewhere where the ocean meets certain textures. You see the runway texture problem when you are waiting for take off and go external and look down the runway. Where the runway blends with the grass it looks wavy and unnatural. It may look normal to you if that's all you've seen, but you will notice it if you compare the same picture in D3D and OpenGL. IP: Logged |
