Without being too heavy on the tech talk, can anyone relate to this particular problem I've had repeatedly, or come up with suggestions to eliminated it? I've got the regular 3DFX card, and I've got the normal 1.5 patched game, with settings at the top. By the way Red Baron 3D runs perfectly on my computer and things like this don't happen there.

What's happening is this. I'll fly fine in a training mission or something in any one of a number of planes. Often within 10 minutes or so, off in the distance, I'll see terrain squares totally currupted like plaid. Then in five seconds, EVERYTHING will lock up. No CTR-ALT-DEL, no Escape, no nothing will work. I'm then forced to turn the computer off and have to go through Scandisk. It's a rotten pain the ass!

Any ideas on this for me? By the way, this really sucks because I've only just started using the game in the last two days, and I need to practice!

I had this happen when a 3DFX card I had was overheating. Also, if you are using the latest drivers this may be causing the problem. 3DFX cards run SDOE best on older (2 or 3 before the latest) drivers.

Jerry:

I'm wondering if maybe this relates to the DirectX driver. Perhaps what the game installs(6) with normally vs DirectX 8, is part of it all. I just didn't want to go downwards when DirectX 8 worked so well with everything else.

I was running DX7 when I had the heat/driver problems. I have a GeForce2 now so don't have any experience with 3DFX and DX8.

Shit, this is really annoying me now!

Now I'm finding that everytime I run a mission of any sort, any plane, it keeps doing the same thing. A corrupted tile, on the ground or at an instrument gauge, then boom, sometimes 2 seconds after, or maybe up to ten, and it freezes all the way! All keys are locked and nothing to do but hit the power button.

I even went through an entire reinstall with 1.5, and Plane Pack 6.0. I made sure to have Direct X 6.0 installed rather than ver.8, just in case.

What is the deal? Everything is perfect and smooth running beforehand. It's like glass with no shudders at all, then it takes a dump!

Help! Anyone help! Has anyone had a problem of this sort beides Jerry, who's hardware is different?

This sucks eggs because I can't really use the game now.

ParaGreen,

This is a known problem with some/all voodoo 3dfx cards using the glide driver in sdoe. I have the same card and same problem as you do. I have to use the D3D driver to get around this problem. It is too bad because the frame rates in glide are much higher than in D3D. The patch team is not fixing this problem as the 3dfx video cards are no longer being produced and are concetrating on the Open GL driver as that seems to be the new standard adopted by video card makers.

I believe going back to older direct x drivers fixes this problem but I am very hesitant to do so since Microsoft says you can't do it safely.

With all the 3DFX cards out there, that people have or are getting second hand, you'd think they'd want to fix it.

Anyway, whatever it is exactly, it's very close to the rocket firing/bombs use bug which some people have mentioned. The fatal effect is precisely the same.

I'll look into what you mentioned. Seems kind of wasteful of the card really.

Paragreen,

I had the same problem with you.. I solved this problem by removing my TV card from my computer. I think there s a conflict between video card and TV card. If you have a TV card, try removing it.
