Boy, I'm just hogging up the Help forum lately ain't I! I guess that's what happens when I stop painting planes and actually play the game (highly recommended if you start burning out working on things for the game rather than enjoying the game itself).

As anyone who's heard me whine before, I have an ancient Voodoo2-based Diamond Monster 3D II video accelerator board. It works OK most of the time, but I have recently become interested in OpenGL since FS-SDOE now supports it.

I went to the OpenGL site, downloaded GLSetup, it detected my board correctly, and seemed to install fine, no errors or anything, so I presume my board can support OpenGL (maybe I'm wrong?). However, when I run the game set to use OpenGL, it is unbelievably slow. I presume it's actually using the software renderer.

Glide gives me the best results so I'm OK, but I was just curious about what OpenGL might offer.

Check your OpenGL card settings, especially antialiasing (sp?). If it's on, turn it off. Other settings can slow it too.

Wish I could help this time, but all I can do is offer you the comfort of knowing that I have a Voodoo3 and playing in OpenGL brings back memories of when I was playing SDOE with a K62-300 and ATI Rage 3D 4mb.. terrifiyingly SLOW! And hey, I know for sure that Voodoo3's support OpenGL

Nat & 3dp,

You should check at what bit depth the voodoo can use hardware acceleration in OpenGL. What most probably happen in your case is that you are using the native openGL of windows, without any hardware acceleration.

e.g. I know for sure that ATI cards only work in accelerated mode in 16 & 32 bits.

Try setting your desktop colors to 16bits (65536 colors) Maybe it will do the trick.

Vincent

P.S. I'll try to find out the real answer meanwhile...
