If I do not have this patch--will I be unable to get into a lobby with others that are using it? In other words, if I'm using 1.5, can I still fly with those who are using the new patch?

Nope, but then, maybe no-ones explained this properly, you don't have to put the patch in the same folder as your usual SDOE stuff, so there's no messing with your normal setup, you can extract it to a new folder, just make sure you put a copy of your keyboard.inp, sdoe.ini and servers.dat in the patch folder, now you can use either the latest patch by starting the app.exe from it's new folder, or play 1.5 version by starting like you normaly would.

It works, except that I now have no throttle on my joystick. The joystick throttle still functions under 1.5 - but it's dead with 9.

For anybody who has the dead joystick throttle problem - here is a fix that works. Got it from Pye-

Open keyboard.inp and find the line in the Engine section:- inpThrottleAnalog = JoystickAxisZ : 0
and comment it out with a ";" (at front left of line of code) then add under it:-
inpThrottleAnalog = JoystickSlider1 : 0 |JoystickAxisZ : 0
