Hi All,

I'm thinking about replacing my Matrox G-200 graphics card (although it doesn't cause any probs with SDOE, just a bit slow) with something more "modern-feature-laden-and-framerate-eating-game-friendly". I was thinking about an ASUS V7100 (a GeForce 2 MX card) but read about it being not a SDOE best friend (http://www.fightersquadron.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000503.html).

Could anyone reccomend something from a similar price level (500 PLN =~ $120).

Would the problem with the Asus be limited only to that particular make or is it something about the chipset. Perhaps new drivers cured the problem?

Anyone out there running SDOE with an MX2 card without problems?

Cheers

Herc Prophet GF2 MX here. Works fine (Abit board with Celeron 566). Don't know that it will accelerate much in D3D, but when the patch becomes standard, the OpenGL works pretty good.

I use a Herc Prophet II 2 MX also, but not with patch 1.5; use it for OpenGl in beta Patch .8 and it works quite well. For patch 1.5, I still use my old Voodoo 2 and Glide, as it gives me the best performance vs. visual quality over the MX's D3D. For other games and things, the MX has proved to be a great card. But it does work with SDOE, and I have tried 1.5 in D3D...my only beef there is that the gamma is too dark, and with the current driver set I use ( 7.58 Detonator ) there are no card gamma settings, and the gamma adjustment in-game has no effect with it..

After reading results of search, I'm pondering over viability of purchasing a Voodoo 4500 card which I could get for around $100 new over here. The downside would be uncertainity of it working well with the Il-2.

What's the difference betweenthe 4 and 5 SDOE-wise? I know about the 3dfx downfall and Nvidia buy out, it's to scare me (geez, I've been through the Amiga demise I can handle this no probs).

Should I consider the 'four' or look for a second hand V 5000?

Hasn't the company that made the Voodoo cards gone out of business? I think they have but I'm not absolutely sure. If they have you won't be able to get any tech support. May not be the best solution.

Sunray, and Pontait mentions above, Voodoo was bought by NVidia, but all the same, support will be difficult to come by, that being said, if the latest drivers work fine, then support isn't a problem. Myself I'm looking for the Herc 3D Prophet 4500 now that Da Jug posted about, in one of the reports on it, it apparently whipped a Voodoo5 by a long margin, I'm looking for a new card and IMO the Herc is the best way for me to go being on a limited budget.

Don't forget Nat, the Herc tests were all run in D3D which is not the best renderer for SDOE. Glide and OpenGl look much better and have better frame rates. Also, the card was at it's best at 32bit color which SDOE doesn't support. For everything else though it looks like a kick-ass card for the money.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in now that I'm a freakin Video card guru
I bought a Hercules 3D Prophet 4000xt 32meg and in D3D I can run beautifully at 32bit color. I picked it up (by the way) for $79 at Best Buy here in VA. The 4500 is going for $149. I would have liked that one, but .....

I'm looking for some soul that would sell me a Kyro II based card in this God and PC parts wholesellers forsaken country. It seems my local stockist is in the UK (Videologic themseves - it would cost me 108 UKP shipping incl. for a 32MB no TV out card). Hey, computer shops in this town haven't heard about the Kyro II chipsetand they associate Hercules brand with the old HGC standard! :O

So it seems I'll sit here for a while and watch you guy how you are getting on with your purchases and wait for the tidal wave to arrive. Or maybe go out and splash out on a CPU upgrade... hmm...

Anyways, plese do let us know how your KyroII babies are behaving.

Cheers
