My computer is screaming for a reformat and Windows reinstall.Which is the best version for SDOE? ME, 98 SE, 98, or 95? Also, does anyone use the beta Voodoo drivers available on http://www.voodoosource.net/3dfx/drivers.shtml ? Thanks for the advice.

I was VERY reluctant to upgrade to Windows ME, but now I'm glad I did. It's survived a couple of crashes that would have required a reinstall of 98. It's much more stable than any other consumer version of Windows I've used. However, if you have DOS apps you like, you can't run them under WinME IP: Logged |

I agree about ME. It's given me no grief. As noted, it no longer has Real Mode DOS support, so keep a copy of your Win98 Startup Disk so you can copy it and modify it as needed if you have any old DOS games you'd like to run using a boot disk. I can't live without my DOS-based TORNADO, and using the WinME starup disk as a starting point for a boot disk doesn't work (Microsoft confirmed this for me). Other programs which require Real Mode DOS support won't work either. Partition Magic 5 springs to mind. This is however, a rare requirement, so the impact is generally minimal.------------------ Be seeing you, 3dp Visit RAF Harkness! IP: Logged |

Ditto the comments on Me. Most stable version yet and no problems with SDOE at all.IP: Logged |

And the framerates went up, or at least stayed the same as in 98?I upgraded from 98 (not 98SE) with the $50 ME Upgrade Product (from Target), and things seemed to slow down. But, I figure a clean install would fix this, by how much though? As long as frame rates are good with ME, I'll take everyone's advice. Thanks! IP: Logged | |
