Try eliminating any programs you have running in the 'background'. Hit and hold Ctrl Alt Delete and "End Task" on all programs except "SysTray" and "Explorer". If you have any joystick config programs running like Wingman profiler, you can leave these on too. Also try starting sdoe and selecting "Options". Go to "Display" and make sure your card and res settings are setup correctly. The SDOE box says you need a min 266mhz for running in software mode and only 200mhz for hardware accelerated mode. You have a Voodoo so make the renderer setting "Glide" if it isn't. It may well be the game is trying to run in software mode. I know you have a 266, but just try visiting the display setup and see how things are.

Also, what version of Direct X do you have? Have you installed the official patch 1.5? If you have, it is usually good practice to run the unpatched game once fresh after an install, and then apply the patch.

S...Harman
Removed program,ran defrag & re-installed.
Did all as you suggested. Still get a frozen black 7\8 bordered screen with a Screamin Demon heading.
One thing -I don't permit the program to load DX-6 as I don't want to over write my 7.0a. This should not be the problem.??
Its got me curious though as I have no problem with programs like EAW,Land Warrior,Unreal & Quake 2. Red Baron gave problems with the add ons so I took it off my HD.
Any help will be thankfuly received

Change your Desktop color depth to 32bit, you probably have the latest (and worst) 3DFX drivers installed, using these drivers SDOE will lock up in anything less than 32bit color.

Try this:

Click "Start" | "Run", type in: Dxdiag and hit OK. This is a Direct X diagnostics proggie, go through all the tabs, and see if you can find any probs mentioned there. There's also some tests the program can do to test your hardware. Try them.

As long as you have a version of DX 6 or higher, there's no reason to go back to a lower version.

Also, how much free disk space do you have on your SDOE install disk? Sometimes, having below a gig or so will affect the virtual memory Windows (and SDOE) needs when the physical RAM runs out, although you do have 128mb of RAM, it's good habit to make sure you have at least a gigabyte free or so on your HD.

Gentlemen S...
[1] Changed desktop color res. to 32 bit.
Result: SDOE no longer freezes to desktop. It simply transfers you to the desktop. You have full use of the mouse & can go into other programs.
[2] Ran the Direct x diagnostics & did all the tests. No problems till I got to one of the last tabs & got a Mssg.- Problem found in system registry-reinstall direct x.
Reinstalled Direct x 7.0a from a Soldier of Fortune cd I hav'nt gotten around to running yet. Re-checked dx diagnostics & got all no problem messages. Started SDOE- No joy! When I try to start a scramble or training mission, I'm returned to the desk top.
Again any suggestions are appreciated. Sorry to be a pest. S..

So does the game still crash when you hit "Missions" from the main menu?

Apart from this, another thing I could suggest is trying Direct X 8.0. Now, this is *just* a suggestion, you don't have to, because as you probably already know, once you install higher version of DX, you can't go back unless you reformat. I've been having some problems recently when SDOE was loading the mission, when it was done loading, instead of showing the game engine, it gave a blank black screen, frozen solid. My other games were also locking up too, so I suspected it wasn't an SDOE-related prob. I reinstalled DX 8.0 and also I removed my display drivers and made them default PCI. I then reinstalled the graphic drivers along with DX 8, and now SDOE seems to be working ok. Maybe some things to try here. Hope this helps.

Yep!
Crashes in missions too. Hmmm. Wonder if my Norton's System Works is a factor?
Don't want to try DX8.Everything else runs great & I don't want to hex my other programs. At least 'till I learn how to re-format this box myself. The local tech gets 100$ a pop.
Thanks for your help, beginning to look hopeless 'though. S...

If Norton SystemWorks is running in the background while you run SDOE, it maybe this that's causing these probs. Maybe...

Scratch,

others have had this problem & the way they alleviated it was to revert to the last drivers for the board that did not support 32 bit.

Apparently there are a couple bugs in those drivers as they are considered beta drivers.

Last drivers installed I believe were whql 1.05.00 . Got them direct from the 3dfx site.
Don't think they are beta. How does one find out if they support 32 bit or not ?
Thanks & S ...
