Have great control with sidewinder stick - but there is no directional control when
taxiing. Recalibrating does not help! Anybody got any ideas?

Go into Options, there is a screen (not home now so can't be more specific) where you can link rudder control to the tail/nose wheel. This allows you to steer while taxing using the rudder. Have you done this?

Yes - I have the "couple steering to rudder" checked in options - doesn't seem to help

Hmmmmm...is it just certain planes? Are you referring to just taxing or the initial stage of takeoff?

Are you using the stickworks.com program to lower the sensitivity of your stick? Those of us with MS sidewinders find it real helpful. The MS Sidewinder is way too sensitive in SDOE for some reason. But you say you have great control with it (in the air?) so that may not be the problem.

Do you have torque on? If you are reving up too fast that would affect ground handling also.

I don't have stickworks - didn't know about it. I'll try lowering joystick sensitivity. The problem is most pronounced with Spitfire take-offs.

So you are talking takeoffs, not taxiing?

If so, the key is practice. These are highly sophisticated FM's on highly sophisticated planes. Some require different takeoff techniques than others....no flaps vs half flaps, gradual throttle vs half throttle vs full, strong rudder to counter torque, etc.

I find that a gradual increase to 50% throttle allows you to control most planes with the proper amount of rudder and airleron pressure. After about 50 MPH the tail wheel isn't much use and you often need to rotate (let the tail raise) to let the rudder have more effect.

If you can fly OK with your Sidewinder without easily flipping your plane over in a tight turn or loop then you don't need the stickworks program. If you find that your stick is too sensitive then go to stickworks.com The program you need is something like "CTSJ". The readme doc with it is pretty self explanitory. I couldn't fly SDOE without it.

Are you flying PlanPak 6.0? This has the most up to date FM's.

I'm home now. Make that "CTFJ".

I just got the above mentioned program and I should have gotten this long ago! My flying skills have vastly improved and I can now handle the planes MUCH better. This was the best thing I could of done for SDOE...

Tnanks for the info. I think it is probably a matter of inexperience in some planes - like trying to rev up too fast in the Spitfire on take-off. With your help, I think I've got it solved.
