Can anyone tell me what the system requirements are for SDOE? How well would a 300mhz pENTIUM 2 with a rage pro with 4 Mb vram hold up? How many planes can be in the air with that graphics card? Oh yea its a laptop too!

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

I started playing SDOE ~ 3 years ago on a PII 300. While I have never used the rage pro with SDOE I have used it with other games and it works quite nicely Only drawback I see is there is ony 4 meg of VRAM....

I persoanly would have to say that you should be able to play SDOE on that machine.. just.

Being VERY realistic.. I have a 533mhz AMD K6-2, Voodoo3 and 196mb Ram, 10,00rpm HD, and I don't often get above 20fps. (To show FPS press Alt P) If you're getting anything near to 20 or better than you should be fine, but on my last machine, AMDK6-2 366mhz with the Rage Pro I was lucky if I got 9Fps (nine!) as most of the guys here will remember me bitching about it, infact, Siggi actually gave me a better graphics card to help me out

oh, I just thought, thats a laptop... most of the new aircraft wont be any good to you since most are now built for hardware accerleration 3D.. Hey, cut the texture detail and object detail down to about half and cross all your fingers and toes.. You should be able to kinda play, but SDOE isn't kind to laptops (unless you have a docking station for it?)

Good luck

Mine's a Celeron 500 with a 4 meg rage pro, not a lap top though. (I'm not about to spend $500 on a card for a game.) It works fine with most of the aircraft. (The Hurricane or Spit 1 won't fly worth a damn. Get up flop around from the tail and head for the ground. They ignore any change to linking the controls to rudder or ailerons, but work ok when starting in the air. I think. I don't think there's anything wrong with the machine, just some quirk in the aircraft.)
Anyway, the video card works fine. Make sure you get the latest driver though.

When I *had* a machine (grrrrr...) it was only a PII 266, 160MB RAM, 16MB Banshee, running desktop res of 10x7 and in-game of 8x6. I never bothered looking at my fame rate because the sim always flew smooth as silk, even with 10+ objects in the air around me in multplay. Given my gaming experience, I would suggest maybe 20 - 30 (anything beyond 15, I've been assured, is not noticable to the human eye). I would realize slight pauses, only rarely, when more objects came into view.

Your biggest item in frame rates will be your vid. A decent card will do wonders for gameplay. A Banshee is not a "super" card, but neither is it a real slouch. I estimate that that card alone extended the life of my old machine by two years. Quite a return on investment for only $135.00 (US) when the vid was brand new.

Joey,

I started SDOE with a AMDK6-2 400Mhz and Monster3D. SDOE was running with no more than 20fps.
Now I have a PIII500Mhz with a RivaTNT 16Mb and SDOE works fine, with more than 20fps in crowded missions (bombers and other stuff).

Sunray,

Since you have an ATI card- if you would like to upgrade, check here to see if they ship overseas.

Over seas? Jug, I live in Canada. ATI is just down the road from here. Ok. it's 2 hours down the road. According to the web page they'll send it here but no PO boxes, etc. That's ok with me. I wouldn't buy anything on line. And I don't use credit cards. Thanks though.

the higher the resolution the better because: the onscreen picture is built using more ppixels giving a sharper clearer image, if you were to compair 640x480 to 1600x1200 you would quiet simply be horrified by the difference, I wont even go down to 800x600 because of this. As for your texture ram, the planes don't have a massive effect until you have a few, just think, the terrain texture on it's own has an actual size of 75mb on it's own, what will happen though is that if your texture ram is overloaded you start getting even lower detail textures, clouds turn into white squares, flak burtsts and explosions become opaque black squares and the game generaly looks a mess
