Any recommendations on a good video card that can run FS and ALL its add ons without any problems. My current system: NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT with updated v 4.12.0.0631 drivers. BIOS version: 2.05.13 On board memory: 8MB Bus type: AGP IRQ: 11 Direct Draw: 1.0 Software version: 4.0 The front of the computer advertises 128bit TNT2. One of the problems I'm having is clouds showing up as blocks on my B17 Attack mission (only one I've played through so far). My other WWII flight sim EAW runs fine though. I've added patch 1.5, plane pack 6.0, nations v2.0 to FS and everything else seems normal. My processer is 550MHz pentium III and I upgraded from 64MB RAM to 256MB RAM. Are there some cards I should stay away from. I'm sure there are several very bright and knowledgeable people in here who could steer me in the right direction. Also Santa, I would like to spend under $500 (so my wife won't kill me) and be able to run the upcoming WWII sims and recently released sims ie.. B17 2, BoB, Il-2. Any other advise about FS or computer issues would be greatly appriciated from this cluebag Newbie. IP: Logged |

One thing to look at....is that Pentium III man enough now?I recently picked up a GeForce 2MX 32Meg for £100 ( whatever that is in $) so perhaps you would be best off looking at a processor upgrade as well. Getting an MX based card and a faster processor may be best overall. Not a hardware expert, but there was a thread in OT about who was running what spec machine. Check them out and see how your set-up compares and see who runs what video card too! IP: Logged |

One of the problems is the Vanta card. Although the CPU is 128 bits, Nvidia cut the costs by only using a 64 bit pipeline to the processor. It: A. Takes more clock cycles to load info to the video processor B. Uses slower ram than the full blown TNT2 C. Has less ram (only came in 8 and 16 MB flavors where the TNT2 came in 16 and 32 MB) Where the TNT2 posted a significant framerate jump over the TNT, the Vanta only posted a marginal increase. Wonder what a GeForce MX card is? It's the GeForce equivalent of the Vanta. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

I just started with FS and I'm using the Voodoo3 3000 AGP vid card. I get multicolored cities soon followed by all kinds of weird graphics stuff. What's the best driver version to use with FS and the VD3-3000? (perhaps a link for a website where I can download them). I've tried drivers v1.05.xx and they lock up the puter so I'm using the ones that came with the vid card (1.00.00 I think). Pity tho, needed the gamma control in that version. Also, now FS will close itself out when I try to access Training! HELP! no doubt these items have been discussed before but would save alot of time doing a search. Thanks. IP: Logged |

The drivers you want to use for the V3 are the 1.04.00 These will solve the texture corruption problem you are having ritt_bear IP: Logged |

Again, a note for V3 users, if you use the latest drivers, you MUST use 32 bit color on your desktop, regardless of using D3D or Glide in SDOE, otherwise you get the complete system loackjs you mentioned (I know, happens to me all the time when I forget to switch to 32bit)That said, Argon hits the nail on the head, the best drivers are the 1.04 version, never had trouble with them in any color setting. ~Nat~ IP: Logged |

Thanks!Just need to find those v1.04.00 drivers. Seems the website links I saved, well, the websites are gone and I've so far been unable to locate any 3dfx drivers earlier than 1.05.xx Anyone have a link? Soon as this Vid thing is fixed I'll be back here looking for some IP action! This sim is a blast to play {:O) [This message has been edited by ritt_bear (edited 01-23-2001).] IP: Logged |

Ritt_Bear,I have the same card you do and I get the same exact purple colored cities and then lockup after that. The only thing that works for me is using the D3D driver instead of the Glide driver setting inside of sdoe. I know there is a link for the 1.04 driver, I just got it last week but I have the address at home. I will try to put it here when I get home unless someone else beats me to it. ------------------ Condor out IP: Logged |

Great! Thanks. I'll stop back later. Gonna go now and try using the D3D.I tried using drivers version 1.05.00 and setting to 32 bit. Worked! Now I can increase the gamma and actually see the scenery and the prog doesn't crash {:O) and 800 x 600 looks just fine I don't really need to go to the higher res. What with all the drivers changes I've been doing my OS or whatever gave out (couldn't open Wordpad Doc's or save anything to my RW drive - all kindsa stuff like that). Did a format and installed everything, all is running OK right now. A sorta fickle flight sim this one seems to be so far. But seems worth working thru all this cause I LOVE them WW1 planes and mannnn that SE5a cockpit! Gonna be asking HOW those panels are made cause I make OK panels for MS CFS and would like to try FS panel making. IP: Logged |

To make a short story even longer, My ISP software crashed my OS (once again) so I wound up formatting and installing everything again. I used V3 drivers v1.05.xx and set the display to 32 bit - added the patch then Nations, WW2 & WW1 Plane Packs in that order. Runs perfect now with no crashes or graphics quirks. Thanks everyone, for all the info and help!

If you want the 1.04 drivers drop me an e mail, I have quiet a few different drivers for my V3 2000 (same drivers as the 3000), the bonus with the 1.04 drivers are 2 things, firstly, you don't uninstal your old drivers, you just install the 1.04, this means you keep the new 3DFX tools also, you might not have noticed, but with the new drivers you can't display in 24bit color anymore, and I guess lastly you can carry on using 16bit desktop and not get really pissed off when you crash your PC cause you forgot to change to 32bit before trying to play SDOE LOLLet me know if you want the 1.04 drivers. ~Nat~
