I'm very new to FS, so I don't know if this is supposed to be that way..ie clouds and debris from damage appear as squares and blocks with no texture to them. I installed patch 1.5 and plane pack to my FS directory installed nations v2 to my media directory and Gerts loader screen #22 as advertised. All of that seems to work fine, however, the square clouds and debris are a bit distracting. Thanks, any and all help would be appreciated from this newbie...PS I am not very computer literate either.

Don't Panic!

The problem you have is known, and is really down to textures. If you have too many different planes, with all their different textures, you can run out of texture memory. The blocky clouds are the result.

If you are running on one of the stock missions that ship with the game, you shouldn't get this!

What spec of machine are you running? and more importantly, what graphics card do you have installed.

Can you post back with a few more details as to the mission you were flting, planes in it etc. and your machine specs please. I am sure we can get to the botom of this!!!!

wakeup tailgunner,

The mission I was flying was B-17 Attack, American Pilot, both as Screaming Demon and Carpetbagger Sqdns. My machine is an eMachine 550MHz pentium III, upgraded from factory installed 64MB RAM to 256MB, 128bit nVIDA TNT2. This machine is the eMonster 550 out of the box except I added more RAM. For the rest of the specs here goes:

Display Adapter Information:
NVIDA Vanta/Vanta LT - I used the nVIDA site and updated my drivers to version 4.12.0.0631
Graphics Processor: NVIDA Vanta
Bus Type: AGP
BIOS Version: 2.05.13
On Board Memory: 8MB
IRQ: 11

Adapter:
NVIDA Vanta/Vanta LT
Direct Draw 1.0
Software Version 4.0

Monitor:
KDS - Super VGA - 1280x1024

In the FS game I have the max resolution set...I forget what that is.

Hopefully this info will help out. Look forward to hearing what you think I might be able to do to fix this.

I'm pretty new at all this computer stuff so you won't hurt my feelings by telling me the basics.

Thanks again for your time wakeup tailgunner

The 8mb memory on your video card is the problem. You need at least 16mb for many of the user made missions.

Until you upgrade, adjust the sliders down in Options Display area. Try running at 800 X 600 resolution. You can also open a mission with the mission editor and reduce the number of planes and/or ground objects. I used to have a 12mb board and had to do this all the time. I now have a 16mb and it made a big difference, but 32mb would be even better. The B-17's are big graphics hogs.

Any recommendations for a good video card upgrade that is compatible with my system . One that would fit the bill for FS (ie. run several fighters and bombers in a battle)and also run ,full tilt, upcoming and recently released sims such as BoB, B17 2, Il-2 without any all available. Do I need 32MB or higher?

Thanks again

You should probably do a "search" on the topic on this board but, based on my experience and others here, FS looks better in Glide with a Voodoo card. However, since 3dFX just folded it probably wouldn't be a good long term investment. Most reviews I have read give the GeForce cards the highest marks for non-glide graphics.

I recently upgraded to a GeForce 2MX based card. Not as powerful as many, but it still packs 32Meg. Costs around £100.

The faster full blown GeForce cards start at twice that, andget more expensive!

I still get blockiness with too many different planes up, but I just can't afford to spend more on a higher spec card.

As to card spec, if you are buying a new card, don't buy less than 32Meg. Flight sims are real memory hogs, and the more video dedicated memory the better! A lower powered card may be cheaper ( though there aren't many lower spec cards around now ) but you will quickly find yourself struggling again.

I COULD probably run B17II and BOB from what I have seen, but I don't intend to buy either until they are actually fixed / patched / dumped in the bargain bins, though not with all the graphics maxed out.

I keep meaning to try re-installing my old voodoo2 to see if I can run the 2 side by side. Glide looks nicer for SDOE, but as Jerry says, 3DFx now belongs to Nvidia. What the long term support for drivers will be is anyones guess. Me, I bought Nvidia, and it does what I want it to do!
