Just got the game. Having problems with CD read. I installed the patch that was supposed to correct this and the patch DOS EXE. gives me this message- "error- ept0036: old file not found. However a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match".I`ve heard a lot of good things about the FS community, I hope one of you can help me out-IP: Logged |

Welcome to SDOE T. Bennett. First of all, can you give us some more information. Like what operating system are you using? I would suggest starting over with a fresh install of the origional CD and then add the patch 1.5 . This usually clears things up. After you get that far you will need Plane Pack 6.0 and Nations V2 to get a good chunk of the latest goodies. Let us know. weaselIP: Logged |

Weasel- Thanks for your reply. I`m running Windows 98, 192mb ram, ATI Xpert128 video card with 16mb memory. I`ve done the fresh install, followed by the CD read patch and the 1.05 patch. But since the CD read patch isn`t working the game crashes when I leave the set up menu and attempt to fly.As I mentioned in my original post, for some reason the first patch isn`t working and without a solution for this I have yet to fly a single mission in fighter squadron. The CD runs erraticly when installing, but eventually I get a install complete message. However the game crashes and the screen freezes when I select play. No problems with my CD ROM with anything but this game-IP: Logged |

Welcome to SDOE, If I remember correctly, you have to fly a mission before installing the patch. This will create the file to be updated. However it sounds like you cannot even fly from a fresh install (before appling the patch), is that right?

Raider- Correct. I have not been able to fly a mission yet. The game crashes without fail every time I select play from the game menu. The crash is bad enough, but my screen freezes each time this happens and I have to re-boot. I`ve tried a fresh install at least half a dozen times with this occuring each time. Unless I can get a solution to this problem it looks like I`ll be going back to Jane`s WW2 Fighters. I thought the open plane project would be sweet, but now I`m becoming discouraged-IP: Logged |

Where did you get the game? Is it a burned copy or out of the box? With a game this old there may be some bad copies someone is trying to unload. Mighty may have some suggestions.Have you tried installing it on another computer? IP: Logged |

I understand your fusrtation. I always hate it when I have a lot of tech problems trying to install a new game. (once was told to update my BIOS) Keep posting here until Michael Harrison or Mighty (They made the game) can reply to you. I don't ever remember hearing anyone not being able to install and play the game. There were some complications installing the patch though. Stick with it, this game will give you a true feeling of flight that I have not felt in any other sim (EAW, CFS, CFSII, Fighter Ace, AH, MSFS, B17 II, even Janes WWII). IP: Logged |

Thanks to all of you who have tried to help. I got the game from a place I saw on the Wings Of Honor site. I could never find a boxed copy of it, so I thought I was lucky to get the disc. It may be a bad disc, but I don`t have another machine to verify this on. I have sent a e-mail to Activisions site and they sent me a response dealing with general install problems. I replied with a more detailed message, hopefully if they can`t help one of the smart guys here can-IP: Logged |

I'm pretty sure the 1.5 patch includes the CD read patch, try a fresh install then just the 1.5 patch.Hippie IP: Logged |

Yep, install JUST the 1.5 patch. The old patch isn't necessary. I had exactly the same problem when I got my copy first off, and the 1.5 patch cured it. As an added bonus, you don't need the CD once you are running with the patch! You don't need to run a mission or anything with the 1.5 patch either! IP: Logged |

Guys- Tried the fresh install with just the 1.05 patch. Same problem, system crashes and screen freezes. This disc has got to be fried. All I can think of now is to try to get another copy somewhere and pray that it works- Thanks for the help.IP: Logged |

Work with me on this one T. You keep mentioning patch 1.05. The patch that we are suggesting is 1.50. Check to make sure that you are using the right patch. weaselIP: Logged |

Weasel- Sorry for the confusion. The patch I`ve been trying IS the 1.5 version that I dowloaded from this site. No luck. Out of the 20 or so PC games I have had and the countless patches and mods I`ve installed for Red Baron 3D, Janes WW2 Fighters, Panzer Elite, etc., I have never had a disc that causes as system crash the way this Fighter Squadron disc has. I`m no tech guru, but if this disc isn`t fried, it`s a mystery to me what the problem is-IP: Logged |

Thats cool T. The only thing that I can suggest now is to find where you can order the CD for about $5.00 shipping. Keep tyring though. This is a blast when you can get it running. You can see from the replies here that people are always willing to help. weaselIP: Logged |

Before you order another one you really should try installing it on a friends system...just to rule out a configuration problem in your system.IP: Logged |

Hmmm..... When you say you are trying a fresh install, are you going through after unistalling and deleating all the directories left on the machine? I hear some people get odd errors if they dont. Also, what do you see when you crash? The first time I loaded SDOE, I thought it had locked up. In actuality it was building a texture directory for the first time. On my old system, on first install, the hard drive was working like crazy. I couldn't see anything because of a driver error with my old card, the loading screen was black. After about 5 minutes (literally, it was a k6-300 with 48 meg of ram and a Riva TNT1) I saw a checkmark appear on the screen. A few minutes later more appeared, and suddenly I was in the first mission. After that I knw to let each theater build a testure file before I gave up. Otherwise, what DirectX version are you running, and do you have the latest video drivers for your card. I can't help but think that the crash is 3d video related since you get to a launch screen. Hey- good test... when you first installed, did you install the movies too? If not, did you see them? If you did not install the movies, but did see them, then your CD is being read. Keep trying- we all want to see you fly with us. ------------------ goth =FC= IP: Logged |

Sounds like a driver problem to me. Probably your video driver. ATI sometimes goes through bouts where they're called the "Driver of the Week Company." Another common culprit is the sound card driver. After updating your drivers make sure you reinstall DirectX, too. You shouldn't have to, but it often seems to be required. What version of DirectX do you have installed right now? IP: Logged |
