I found the reason for my planes crashing. The heading and Speed settings for the planes are swapped in the mission editor- i.e. what you enter for the speed is the aircrafts heading, what you enter for the heading is the aircrafts starting speed.

This isn't readily apparent with WWII planes. It became obvious using the WWI planes because I had the brits starting at a heading of 210 and the germans starting at a heading of 300. This was read as the starting speed and would rip the wings off the planes immediately So- down they'd all go.

I swapped the values and everything starts up fine now.
